Car sold: how much insurance premium is refunded?

After you sell your car, the insurer refunds the unexpired premium pro rata. Euro calculation by sale date, refund deadline and the last quarter trap in Belgium.

Yes, the insurer gives the money back. The sale ends the contract, and the premium paid for the days left until the renewal date returns to the seller, tax included. The amount depends on one thing: the date of the sale.

On a 1,135 € full omnium sold on 30 June, the refund reaches 572.16 €. Sold on 10 December, the same car brings back 65.30 €.

A few Belgian terms for readers new to the market. Omnium is the Belgian name for comprehensive cover. Third party liability (RC) is the compulsory cover. The bonus-malus is a 0-22 scale on which each at fault claim moves you up. The FSMA is the Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority, which supervises insurers and brokers.

How much insurance is refunded after selling a car in Belgium?

The unexpired premium: the share of premium covering the period after the contract ends. It is calculated to the day, on the premium actually paid, tax included.

The formula fits on one line. Annual premium × remaining days ÷ 365 = refund. The result is a theoretical maximum: an insurer may withhold contractual fees, and what you receive also depends on the date it records the end of the contract. That date is the documented date of sale, not the day you think of it.

What does pro rata temporis mean for a premium?

Pro rata temporis means "in proportion to the time elapsed". A car insurance contract runs from one annual renewal date to the next: the term. Everything before the end of the contract belongs to the insurer, everything after comes back to you.

A worked example. Your renewal date is 1 January, you sell on 30 September, and 92 days remain until 31 December. For a 353 € third party premium, the unexpired share is 353 × 92 ÷ 365, that is 88.98 €.

How much do you get back depending on the sale date?

The table applies the formula to the site's reference profile: a 35 year old driver, Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, five years without a claim, about 15,000 km a year, with the premium paid annually. The premiums (353 € third party, 1,135 € full omnium) are averages across nine insurers from the public Mon-Assurance-Auto grid, recorded on 26 January 2026.

The refund melts with the calendar: the sale date decides everything.

One thing stands out. Between a sale in March and a sale in December, the insurer keeps 789.84 € more on the full omnium. The saving therefore depends less on the sale price of the car than on the moment you sign.

Why does selling in the last three months complicate the refund?

Because the payment deadline gets longer. According to Test-Achats, the Belgian consumer organisation, the insurer must refund within 30 days of the contract end date. The rule has an exception: if the sale is reported in the last three months before the annual renewal date, payment can be postponed to the end of the following insurance year, a worst case wait of 15 months and 30 days.

The sales of 15 November and 10 December fall in that window. The 143.04 € and 65.30 € in the table can therefore sit with the insurer for over a year. Some companies pay straight away, others let the period run: ask for the policy in writing before the sale.

The Insurance Act of 4 April 2014 frames these rules, and each contract spells them out in its general conditions. Ten minutes of checking avoids discovering the clause once the car has gone.

Does paying monthly or annually change the refund?

Yes, and not in the direction people expect. The monthly payer has nothing to claim back, having only paid for the months that have run. The annual payer waits for a refund, but has avoided instalment fees.

Comparison on 30 September, on the reference full omnium, with nine monthly instalments already debited:

Payment methodAmount paidRefundNet cost of the covered period
Annual1,135.00 €286.08 €848.92 €
Free monthly (94.58 € a month)851.22 €0 €851.22 €
Monthly at 8 % (102.15 € a month)919.35 €0 €919.35 €

Annual payment wins even with the wait. The 70.43 € gap against monthly at 8 % far exceeds the interest lost on 286.08 € tied up for a few weeks. The real cost of instalments is detailed in our article on monthly or annual payment.

How much does forgetting to report the sale cost?

Three euros eleven a day on full omnium. All for nothing: the car is no longer yours.

CoverCost per dayFor 30 days of delayFor 90 days of delay
Third party only0.97 €29.01 €87.03 €
Full omnium3.11 €93.29 €279.86 €

The costliest case is total omission, which lets the contract renew at the next date. See our article on the renewal notice.

Which steps, in which order?

According to Test-Achats, the sequence is:

  1. Return the plate to the DIV, at a post office point, and receive the deregistration certificate.
  2. Tell the insurer in writing that the car has been sold.
  3. Send it the last green card and the deregistration certificate.
  4. Ask for the statement of the unexpired premium, with the detail of tax and fees withheld.
  5. If you change insurer, request your claims history certificate.

For cancelling mid-year, our guide to switching car insurance gives the notice periods.

Where to compare before buying another car?

A sale is often the first link in a purchase. AG Insurance, Ethias, AXA, Belfius Insurance, KBC, Yuzzu and P&V do not show the same premiums for the same profile: see the detail in our ranking of the best car insurers. A premium simulation on the next car, then the comparison tool, set the budget before you sign the purchase.

Method and sources

The site's reference profile: a 35 year old driver, Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, five years without a claim, about 15,000 km a year. The premiums of 353 € (third party) and 1,135 € (full omnium) are our own averages across nine insurers, calculated from the public grids of Mon-Assurance-Auto (Yago S.A., broker licensed by the FSMA under number 114863), recorded on 26 January 2026. The profile simulated by that publisher differs from ours: only ratios and gaps are claimed to be transposable.

All refunds are our own calculations: premium × remaining days ÷ 365, contract running from 1 January to 31 December 2026, contract end on the day of sale, no fees withheld by the insurer. The monthly amounts of 94.58 € and 102.15 € repeat the calculation of our article on monthly payment. The procedure (plate, deregistration certificate, green card) and the 30 day deadline come from Test-Achats, page consulted on 17 October 2026; the last three months rule is the one that page reports, to be checked in your general conditions. The legal framework is the Insurance Act of 4 April 2014.

This site compares and calculates. It does not sell insurance, is not an intermediary within the meaning of the Insurance Act of 4 April 2014 and gives no individual recommendation: for your contract, speak to your insurer or a broker licensed by the FSMA. In a dispute over a statement, the Insurance Ombudsman is competent and free of charge; the Bureau de Tarification, the Belgian pricing bureau, remains the way out for profiles refused third party cover. No link on this page is affiliated and no insurer pays for its presence.

In short

Selling your car earns a pro rata premium refund: 572.16 € on full omnium on 30 June, 65.30 € on 10 December. Warning the insurer on the day of sale avoids losing 3.11 € a day, and an annual payment that is refunded still beats a charged monthly plan. Frequently asked questions

In principle, yes. The sale ends the insured risk, and the part of the premium covering the period after the end of the contract must be returned, tax included. The amount is calculated pro rata over the days left until the annual renewal date. Some contracts withhold contractual fees: read your general conditions before disputing a statement.

Test-Achats states that the insurer must refund within 30 days of the contract end date. When the sale is reported in the last three months before the annual renewal date, payment can be postponed to the end of the following insurance year, with a maximum wait of 15 months and 30 days. Some insurers pay immediately, others wait for the full period.

Returning the plate to the DIV (the Belgian vehicle registration authority) gives you a deregistration certificate, which insurers ask for together with the last green card. If you keep the plate for a future car, tell your insurer: it will offer to move the contract to the new vehicle or suspend it. Terms vary from one insurer to another.

The premium keeps running. On the reference profile, a month of delay costs 93.29 € on full omnium and 29.01 € on third party. If the vehicle is already sold, those euros protect nothing. Warn the insurer when the keys change hands, with proof of sale.

Yes, because you only pay for the months that have run. The calculation is still unfavourable as soon as instalments are charged: on 30 September, monthly payment at 8 % costs 919.35 € against 848.92 € net for an annual payment that is refunded. Monthly only wins if it is free and you fear a long delay.

In principle yes, if the insurer agrees to replace the insured vehicle. The premium is then recalculated on the new car, and the part already paid counts as credit. Ask for a replacement quote before signing the sale deed: it shows the exact gap with a cancellation followed by a new contract.

No. Your degree on the 0-22 scale depends on at fault claims, not on selling a vehicle. Ask for your claims history certificate if you change insurer, so your record follows you at the next signing.
