Glass breakage in car insurance: claim or pay?

A windscreen costs 219 to 683 € depending on the repairer, the mini omnium block 308 € a year, and the deductible is usually nil at an approved repairer. The Belgian arithmetic.

Claim: if your contract includes glass breakage, a windscreen replaced at an approved repairer usually costs you nothing, neither deductible nor bonus-malus. The real calculation happens earlier, when you choose the contract: buying mini omnium for the glass alone almost never pays back.

A few Belgian terms for readers new to the market. Omnium is the Belgian name for comprehensive cover: mini omnium covers external risks such as theft, fire, glass and natural forces, full omnium adds damage to your own car when you are at fault. The bonus-malus is a 0-22 scale on which each at fault claim moves you up and each claim free year moves you down, with a direct effect on your premium. The FSMA is the Belgian financial services and markets authority, which licenses insurers and brokers.

Is glass breakage covered by car insurance?

Not by third party liability alone. You need mini omnium or full omnium, and Wikifin, the financial education portal of the FSMA, puts glass breakage in both.

The trap is vocabulary. The word omnium has no legal definition in Belgium, and each company writes its own list of what "glass breakage" includes.

How much does a windscreen cost without insurance?

From 219 to 683 € for a five door VW Golf, according to the comparison published by HelloSafe. Same windscreen, same car, a ratio of 1 to 3.1.

RepairerWindscreen price (five door Golf)Gap to the 343 € average
Carglass683 €+99 %
Touring Glass434 €+26 %
Auto Glass Clinic302 €-12 %
Glass One Auto270 €-21 %
Awa Glass254 €-26 %
Autoglass Europa240 €-30 %
Speedglass219 €-36 %

The page is dated 25 August 2022 and I consulted it on 2 October 2026: the amounts have probably moved. I therefore use it as an order of magnitude and a ratio, not as a price list. Selectra, for its part, gives 100 to 300 € for a car window, which confirms that the range is wide.

Another limit: these are the prices a customer without insurance pays. An approved repairer bills the insurer, not you, and the displayed price stops being the one you pay.

What does the cover that pays for glass cost?

It is not sold on its own. Glass travels inside the mini omnium block, alongside theft, fire and natural forces, and that block costs 308 € a year on average: the gap between mini omnium (661 €) and third party liability alone (353 €) on the public grid of nine insurers from Mon-Assurance-Auto, recorded on 26/01/2026. It runs from 185 € at ACM Insurance to 467 € at Ethias, as broken down in our article on the cost of comprehensive cover.

On that profile, a 219 € windscreen equals 0.7 years of block. At 683 €, 2.2 years.

When does the mini omnium block pay for itself on glass alone?

Rarely, and a table shows why. Here is the average annual cost of a windscreen paid out of pocket, by price and replacement frequency. The frequency is a calculation assumption, not a statistic: no Belgian source consulted publishes one.

Windscreen priceOne every 10 yearsEvery 5 yearsEvery 3 yearsEvery 2 years
219 € (Speedglass)22 € a year44 €73 €110 €
343 € (average)34 € a year69 €114 €172 €
683 € (Carglass)68 € a year137 €228 €342 €

The mini omnium block costs 308 €. Glass alone only beats it in the harshest cell: a 683 € windscreen every two years, or 342 €.

In other words, glass breakage cover is not a sufficient reason to move up a tier. It is a bonus you collect when you buy omnium for something else.

Why does mini omnium still make sense?

Because it covers two risks far costlier than glass. Our article on hail prices an average claim at 2,743 € after the storms of May 2026, or 8.9 years of block. Theft and fire of a vehicle are counted in the value of the car.

Glass is therefore a small, frequent risk packed inside insurance against large, rare ones. It is the opposite of legal expenses cover, where the premium is small against a large bill. Here the premium is large against a modest bill, and the rare risk tips the balance.

To price the block on your own number plate, the simulator gives the mini omnium premium, and the comparison tool sets it against third party liability.

Should you claim glass breakage or pay out of pocket?

Claim, as long as you are covered. The calculation that sometimes justifies paying a small at fault claim yourself does not apply.

It sets the repair cost against the extra premium accumulated while the bonus-malus degree comes back down: our guide prices 280 € in the first year for an at fault claim on the reference profile. For glass, according to HelloSafe, the incident is recorded as a claim but has no consequence on the bonus-malus, and the repair is free at an approved repairer.

A stone chip is glass. A windscreen broken in a collision belongs to the claim of the accident itself, with its own calculation: see our guide to reporting a claim or paying out of pocket.

Five checks before driving on with a crack

  • The glass line of your particular conditions: no deductible, or the general omnium deductible?
  • The approved network: going outside it can bring a deductible or a partial refund.
  • The scope: glazing only, or also headlights, mirrors and sunroof?
  • The reporting deadline: HelloSafe mentions five working days, but each contract sets its own.
  • Prior approval: advancing the bill without your insurer's agreement is the surest way not to be fully reimbursed.

Repair the chip rather than replace the windscreen: is there a saving?

Almost always, in principle, but I do not put a figure on it for lack of a dated Belgian source. None of the pages consulted publishes a chip repair price, and an invented amount would help nobody.

The useful rule is another one: the longer you wait, the fewer options remain. A spreading crack, or a chip in the driver's field of view or near the edge of the glass, forces replacement. A simple chip then becomes a 219 to 683 € windscreen.

HelloSafe also notes that glass repairs are free at the insurer's approved repairers. Repairing early therefore wins twice: no deductible, and no full replacement to justify later.

Should you keep glass breakage cover on an ageing car?

Yes, as long as you keep omnium for theft and hail, not for the glass. When the car is worth less than a few years of block, the reasoning reverses for the whole of mini omnium, not for glass in particular: our article on mini omnium or full omnium sets the threshold.

Method, profile and sources

Site reference profile: a 35 year old driver, VW Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claims for five years, around 15,000 km a year. Premiums (third party 353 €, mini omnium 661 €, block of 308 €, from 185 to 467 €) are our own averages and subtractions on the public grids of Mon-Assurance-Auto (Yago S.A., broker licensed by the FSMA under number 114863), recorded on 26/01/2026 and consulted on 02/10/2026. Their simulated profile (a female driver born in 1968, Golf Diesel 85 kW, Walloon Brabant) differs from ours: only gaps and ratios are claimed to be transposable.

The seven windscreen prices, the 343 € average, the ratios and the annual costs come from or are calculated on the HelloSafe comparison for a five door Golf, updated on 25/08/2022 and consulted on 02/10/2026. The 100 to 300 € range for a window comes from Selectra, page consulted on 02/10/2026. Replacement frequencies are the author's assumptions. The Vivium and Baloise deductible rules are those described in our Baloise or Vivium comparison, from contract documents whose version may have changed.

Legal framework: the Insurance Act of 4 April 2014, supervised by the FSMA. The 0-22 bonus-malus degree is explained in our bonus-malus guide. This site compares and calculates, does not sell insurance, is not an intermediary and gives no personal recommendation: speak to your insurer or an FSMA licensed broker. In case of dispute, the Insurance Ombudsman steps in free of charge, and a driver whom no company will accept can apply to the Tariff Bureau (Bureau de Tarification). Frequently asked questions

No. Compulsory third party liability pays for damage you cause to others, never for the windscreen of your own car. Glass falls under the glass breakage cover included in mini omnium and full omnium. Without it the bill is yours: 219 to 683 € for a Golf windscreen on the price comparison consulted.

As a rule, no. It is recorded as a claim, but it makes nobody liable: the 0-22 bonus-malus degree only moves after an at fault third party liability claim. An at fault claim costs 280 € in the first year on the profile priced in our bonus-malus guide. Ask your insurer to confirm the rule in your contract.

Often none when the repair goes through a repairer approved by the insurer. According to the terms described in our Baloise or Vivium comparison, Vivium pays glass breakage without a deductible, while Baloise applies its deductible to damage to the vehicle in general. Read the glass line of your particular conditions, not the general deductible.

It depends on the contract, and it is one of the most frequent traps. Some contracts file headlights and mirrors under glass, others treat them as material damage, so with the full omnium deductible, or no cover at all under mini omnium. Ask in writing whether the cover is for glazing only or also for lights and mirrors.
