Baloise vs Vivium car insurance: up to 18% apart

Baloise or Vivium for car insurance in Belgium? Eighteen premiums recorded in March 2026: Baloise is cheaper in seven cases out of nine, but the gap runs from -4.6% to +18% depending on age and car.

ByDamien8 min read

Baloise is cheaper than Vivium in seven cases out of nine on the March 2026 estimates, but the advantage is anything but constant. It runs from 4.6% in Vivium's favour on a Fiat 500 at 30 to 18% in Baloise's favour on a BMW 5 Series at 50. The right insurer depends on the car and the age.

Eighteen prices, one source page

The comparison rests on the price page of the broker Yago (licensed by the FSMA, Belgium's financial regulator), consulted on 29 September 2026. It publishes March 2026 estimates for Baloise and Vivium: three cars, three ages, so nine annual premiums per insurer.

The full profile (bonus-malus degree, region, mileage, cover level) is not stated by the source. It is not our reference profile either, a 35-year-old driver of a Golf 1.5 TSI in Flemish Brabant, and absolute amounts do not carry over as they stand. The ratios between the two insurers, measured on identical cases, do.

Baloise or Vivium: which is cheaper?

Baloise, seven times out of nine. The table gives the annual premiums and Vivium's gap relative to Baloise.

Both exceptions involve the same car. On the city car Vivium comes back ahead, clearly at first, then by seven euros, then not at all.

Why does the Fiat 500 flip the ranking?

Because Vivium loads engine power far more heavily than Baloise. Compare the BMW with the Fiat at the same age.

AgeBMW vs Fiat at BaloiseBMW vs Fiat at Vivium
30+17.1% (€108)+37.3% (€225)
40+16.8% (€86)+36.5% (€184)
50+16.5% (€75)+35.9% (€165)

At Baloise the big saloon costs a sixth more than the city car. At Vivium, more than a third. The ratio barely moves from one age to the next, which suggests a vehicle coefficient applied multiplicatively. That is an inference drawn from nine pairs of prices: neither company publishes its tariff.

The practical consequence reads along the row. A small engine settles the duel out of court, a powerful saloon decides it. Our article on fiscal horsepower already shows that declared power weighs less than people think on premiums in general. This pair of insurers proves that its weight can vary by a factor of two from one company to the next.

Age removes 28% of the premium at Baloise and 24% at Vivium

With the car held constant, going from 30 to 50 lightens the bill at both, in a surprisingly stable proportion.

CarBaloise, 30 to 50Vivium, 30 to 50
BMW 5 Series-28.5% (-€211)-24.6% (-€204)
VW Golf-28.4% (-€193)-24.2% (-€170)
Fiat 500-28.2% (-€178)-23.9% (-€144)

From 30 to 40 the drop is 19% at Baloise and 16 to 17% at Vivium. From 40 to 50 it falls to 11% and 9%. Two lines on the curve, two speeds: Baloise rewards experience more, and the gap in its favour doubles on the Golf between 30 and 50, from €23 to €46.

This figure says nothing about the driver under 25 or the senior. For those ages, our articles on young driver insurance and senior driver insurance take over.

Switching insurer for €46 a year: the calculation

A premium gap only justifies a decision if it accumulates. Here are the three cars at 40, over ten years at a constant gap, a generous assumption since tariffs move every year.

Case at 40Yearly saving at BaloiseOver ten years
BMW 5 Series€91€910
VW Golf€38€380
Fiat 500-€7 (Vivium wins)-€70

The threshold depends on what switching costs in time and risk, not in money: cancelling at renewal costs nothing in itself. But an insurer that handles your claims history certificate badly, or a higher excess at the competitor, wipes out €38 a year in a single claim. Below about a hundred euros a year, the gap sits within the margin of error between one quote and the next.

Our article on the price of comprehensive insurance confirms it: on the January 2026 grid, Baloise ranks eighth out of nine on RC (€399), sixth on mini-omnium (€678) and fifth on full omnium (€1,144). A price ranking depends on the cover level as much as on the insurer.

Two contracts that do not say the same thing

The price compares premiums, not contracts. Two public documents show where the covers diverge, with a date caveat for the second.

  • Baloise, MobilitySafe 1 information sheet (reference 02.26). Omnium Safe 1 covers fire, theft, broken glass, natural events, animal collisions and damage to the vehicle. The excess applies to vehicle damage, except in cases of vandalism and total loss. The replacement car is limited to 30 days.
  • Vivium, general conditions (version P01.2017). Broken glass and natural events are paid without an excess. Vandalism falls under material damage, so under full omnium. The material damage excesses appear in the particular conditions. The replacement car is limited to 30 days.
  • Limit of this reading. The Vivium document dates from 2017 and the insurer may have revised it since. Ask for the version currently in force before comparing two quotes line by line, and get the excess for each cover repeated in writing.

Vandalism illustrates the stakes: no excess at Baloise, but under full omnium at Vivium with the excess from the particular conditions, which changes the arithmetic as soon as a claim exceeds a few hundred euros.

Do these amounts apply to your profile?

Not in absolute terms, and here is why. The source page states neither the cover level, nor the bonus-malus degree, nor the region. One benchmark shows it: the 50-year-old Golf is estimated at €486 at Baloise, while the January 2026 public grid of Mon-Assurance-Auto gives €399 for RC and €678 for mini-omnium at the same company, for a woman born in 1968 at the lowest degree. The estimate falls between the two, cover level unknown.

To place our reference profile (35 years old, Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claim in five years, about 15,000 km a year), the midpoint of the Golf at 30 and 40 gives €614 at Baloise and €644 at Vivium. That is a linear interpolation between two ages, on a 72 kW Golf rather than a 110 kW one, so an order of magnitude, not a quote.

The real price has to be requested online from each company, with your number plate. Then put the two offers side by side in the comparison tool and check the whole market in our best car insurance ranking. For the question of channel (broker or direct), the gap is measured in our article broker or online car insurance.

Method and sources

The eighteen annual premiums come from the "Baloise" and "Vivium" tables (March 2026 estimates) on the price page of Yago, a broker licensed by the FSMA, consulted on 29 September 2026. The vehicles are a BMW 5 Series 130 kW, a Fiat 500 51 kW and a VW Golf 72 kW; the ages are 30, 40 and 50. As the full profile is not published, gaps and ratios are claimed as transferable, not amounts. Totals, percentages, car-against-car comparison, ten-year accumulation and the age-35 interpolation: our own calculations.

The January 2026 benchmarks (€399 on RC and €678 on mini-omnium at Baloise) come from the Mon-Assurance-Auto grid, recorded on 26 January 2026 for a woman born in 1968. Baloise's covers are described in its MobilitySafe 1 information sheet; Vivium's in its general conditions, version 2017, possibly outdated. The contractual framework is the law of 4 April 2014 on insurance.

This site compares and calculates. It does not sell insurance, is not an intermediary under that law, and gives no individual recommendation: to take out a policy, contact the insurer or a broker licensed by the FSMA. In a dispute, the Insurance Ombudsman steps in free of charge, and the Bureau de Tarification remains the recourse for a driver no company will accept. No insurer pays for its presence here and no link is an affiliate link.

In summary

On eighteen premiums dated March 2026, Baloise wins seven times out of nine, for €350 less on the total, and its advantage grows with the driver's age and the car's power. Vivium takes over on the small engine, because it widens the gap between a city car and a powerful saloon twice as much. Neither is "the cheapest" in general: the age and car pairing decides, then the excess, then the personal quote. Run the simulator with your number plate and compare both offers before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

In seven cases out of nine on the March 2026 estimates: Baloise wins on the BMW 5 Series and the VW Golf at all three ages, and on the Fiat 500 at 50. Vivium only comes out ahead on the Fiat 500, by €29 at 30 and €7 at 40. Across the nine cases the total reaches €5,176 at Baloise and €5,526 at Vivium, €350 less.

Because Vivium reduces its premium less as the driver ages. Between 30 and 50 the premium falls by 28% at Baloise and by 24% at Vivium. On the VW Golf the gap goes from €23 at 30 to €46 at 50, that is 3.4% then 9.5%. This is an observation across nine pairs of prices, not a pricing rule either company has published.

The source does not say. The 50-year-old Golf at €486 at Baloise sits between the third-party liability (RC) and mini-omnium premiums of Baloise's January 2026 grid (€399 and €678, for a different profile). These amounts are therefore useful for comparing two insurers against each other on a constant profile, not for budgeting a specific cover level.

Rarely at that price. Over ten years, €46 a year adds up to €460, provided the gap stays stable, the bonus-malus degree (Belgium's 0 to 22 no-claims scale) is carried over identically, and the covers compared are equivalent. A €91 yearly gap on a powerful car at 40, or €910 over ten years, does justify getting a quote from the other company.
