Paying your car insurance monthly costs between 0 € and 90.80 € extra a year in Belgium, depending on the insurer and the premium. Behind that surcharge sits a loan: at 7 %, spreading a premium over twelve months amounts to borrowing at an annual rate of 16.1 %. Monthly payment only costs nothing when the direct debit is free.
Split payment means settling the premium in two, four or twelve instalments instead of one. A Belgian contract remains annual in every case: only the payment calendar changes, and that calendar is what some insurers charge for.
A few Belgian terms for readers new to the market. Omnium is the Belgian name for comprehensive cover: mini omnium covers theft, fire, glass and natural forces, full omnium adds damage to your own car. Third party liability (RC) is the compulsory cover. The bonus-malus is a 0-22 scale on which each at fault claim moves you up. Insurance premium tax is a federal tax already included in the premiums quoted below. The FSMA is the Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority, which supervises insurers and brokers.
Monthly or annual: the head to head, insurer by insurer
The same premium, two ways to pay it, and gaps ranging from nothing to double depending on the company.
| Insurer | How it is charged | Yearly surcharge on 353 € third party | Yearly surcharge on 1,135 € full omnium | Implicit rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Belfius Direct | no fee on direct debit | 0 € | 0 € | 0 % |
| Allianz | 5.65 % according to Selectra | 19.94 € | 64.13 € | 12.9 % |
| Ethias | 7 % according to Selectra | 24.71 € | 79.45 € | 16.1 % |
| Yuzzu | flat fee of 4 € a month | 48 € | 48 € | 33 % on third party, 9.5 % on omnium |
| Top of the market range | 8 % | 28.24 € | 90.80 € | 18.6 % |
Premiums for the reference profile, averages from the public Mon-Assurance-Auto grid recorded on 26 January 2026. Instalment terms recorded on 28 September 2026 (sources detailed at the end of the article).
Read the table from left to right. Two insurers can show the same annual premium and take 80 € more or less from your account over the year, only because you ticked "monthly" on the form. No premium comparison site shows this line.

How much does monthly payment of car insurance cost?
From 0 € to 7.57 € extra a month on a full omnium, depending on the insurer's terms.
Here is the calculation line by line on the site's reference profile: a 35 year old driver, Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, five years without a claim, about 15,000 km a year.
| Cover | Annual premium | Monthly, no fee | At 5.65 % | At 7 % | At 8 % |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Third party only | 353 € | 29.42 € | 31.08 € | 31.48 € | 31.77 € |
| Mini omnium | 661 € | 55.08 € | 58.20 € | 58.94 € | 59.49 € |
| Full omnium | 1,135 € | 94.58 € | 99.93 € | 101.20 € | 102.15 € |
On third party only, the monthly gap is two euros. Nobody switches insurer over two euros, and that is why the charge survives: split into twelve, it goes unnoticed. It does not appear in the premiums published by comparison sites either, which all show annual amounts. It only shows up when you choose the payment frequency. Multiplied by twelve and applied to an omnium, it becomes 79.45 € a year at 7 %, more than the premium tax increase of 1 July 2026, which costs 3.15 € a year on a 900 € net budget, as our article on car insurance premium tax sets out.
What interest rate hides behind instalment fees?
A rate well above the percentage shown: 7 % in fees equals credit at 16.1 % a year.
The explanation lies in the calendar. When you pay in twelve instalments you do not keep the whole premium for a year: the first instalment leaves on the renewal date and the last one eleven months later, so on average you only hold a little under half the sum for a little under half a year, which means the fees, set against this small capital actually "lent" by the insurer over such a short period, produce an annual rate far higher than the percentage printed on the quote. The rate is calculated the way a banker calculates an annual percentage rate: the rate that makes the annual premium paid up front equal to the series of twelve instalments.
| Monthly instalment fee | Implicit annual rate |
|---|---|
| 2 % | 4.4 % |
| 3 % | 6.7 % |
| 4 % | 9 % |
| 5 % | 11.3 % |
| 5.65 % | 12.9 % |
| 7 % | 16.1 % |
| 8 % | 18.6 % |
A useful rule of thumb: the implicit rate is a little more than twice the fee percentage. At 7 % you are signing consumer credit without knowing it, and without any of the protections that normally come with it. For real credit, the FPS Economy sets maximum annual percentage rates, revised according to reference indices and published in the Belgian Official Gazette. An instalment surcharge is not credit in the legal sense and falls under none of those caps.
The arithmetic is blunt. If you have the annual premium available, paying it in one go earns you the equivalent of a risk free 16.1 % investment with an insurer that charges 7 %. No Belgian savings account comes close.
4 € a month at Yuzzu: 17.8 % of third party, 5.1 % of an omnium
A flat fee reverses the logic of the percentage: it weighs heavily on small premiums and becomes almost painless on large ones.
Yuzzu, a brand of the AXA group, charges 4 € a month for administrative follow up when you switch from annual to monthly payment, and states that you cannot choose the debit date. Apply that fee to the Yuzzu premiums on the 26 January 2026 grid.
| Cover at Yuzzu | Annual premium | Yearly fee | Share of premium | Implicit rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Third party only | 270 € | 48 € | 17.8 % | 44.7 % |
| Mini omnium | 615 € | 48 € | 7.8 % | 18.1 % |
| Full omnium | 939 € | 48 € | 5.1 % | 11.6 % |
On third party only, the monthly fee wipes out much of the price advantage. Yuzzu is the cheapest insurer on the grid for third party, at 270 €, but paid monthly that cover comes to 318 €, 37 € more than Belfius Direct's 281 € third party paid monthly at no charge. An 11 € annual gap in Yuzzu's favour turns into 37 € in Belfius Direct's favour.
Does paying once a year mean losing savings interest?
Yes, but very little: 5.20 € a year per point of yield on a 1,135 € full omnium.
By paying up front you tie up 11/24 of the premium on average, that is 45.8 %, over the year: 520.21 € out of 1,135 €, 161.79 € out of 353 €. Parked in an account at 1 %, that amount would earn 5.20 €; at 2 %, 10.40 €.
Against the 79.45 € of a 7 % instalment plan, it is not even close.
Monthly payment makes sense in two cases, and two only. Either it is free, and you then pocket those few euros of interest on top of the flexibility. Or the annual premium would force you to draw on a credit line dearer than the implicit rate in the table, an authorised overdraft for instance: paying 16.1 % is then cheaper than paying more to the bank.
Five years of instalments cost more than an at fault accident
397.25 €. That is what five years of paying a 1,135 € full omnium monthly at 7 % adds up to.
Set that sum against our bonus-malus guide, which puts the premium increase in the first year after an at fault claim at 280 €, for a five degree climb on the 0-22 scale and a 700 € base premium. Charged instalments cost more over five years than the first year of malus after a fender bender. The driver who spends hours wondering whether to report a claim or pay out of pocket often lets a similar sum slip away, without a thought, on the payment method.
Monthly direct debit: six points to check before signing
- The annual amount and the monthly amount, both requested in writing. Multiply the monthly amount by twelve: the difference is the exact price of spreading.
- The nature of the fee, percentage or flat. A flat fee is compared with your premium, a percentage with the implicit rate in the table.
- Intermediate frequencies. Several insurers also offer half yearly or quarterly payment, often less loaded than monthly.
- The required payment method. Belfius Direct requires a direct debit with a signed form; Yuzzu sets the debit date itself.
- The date a change takes effect. At Yuzzu, switching from monthly to annual, or the reverse, only applies from the next renewal date.
- Bundling of contracts. Some companies waive instalment fees when you hold several non life contracts with them: ask, the answer is sometimes worth a line on the quote.

What if I cancel during the year?
Paying up front does not lock you in. The Ethias product information document of April 2026 points out that once twelve months of cover have passed, the contract can be cancelled at any time, taking effect two months after notification. The unexpired share of premium is then refunded pro rata, tax included, as our article on premium tax explains.
Monthly payment therefore gives no exit advantage. It only saves you waiting for the refund.
Method, reference profile and sources
The site's reference profile: a 35 year old driver, Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, five years without a claim, about 15,000 km a year. The premiums of 353 € (third party), 661 € (mini omnium) and 1,135 € (full omnium) are our own averages across nine insurers, calculated from the public grids of Mon-Assurance-Auto (Yago S.A., broker licensed by the FSMA under number 114863) recorded on 26 January 2026; the Yuzzu (270, 615 and 939 €), Belfius Direct (281 €) and Ethias (1,246 €) premiums come from the same grids. The profile simulated by that publisher (a female driver born in 1968, Golf Diesel, Walloon Brabant, under 10,000 km a year) differs from ours: only gaps and ratios are claimed to be transposable.
Instalment terms, consulted on 28 September 2026. Belfius Direct: billing FAQ, no instalment fee on direct debit. Yuzzu: "Modifier votre contrat" page, 4 € a month. Ethias: Car Insurance product information document (ref. 1251-044/1, 04/26), possible additional costs not quantified. Ethias 7 % and Allianz 5.65 %: Selectra, page updated on 27 September 2026, figures not confirmed by an insurer source. The 2 % to 8 % range is an unattributed market range, already used in our articles on premium tax and on the average price. AXA and Argenta are left out of the table: figures published by comparison sites and the press contradict each other or are dated (8 % monthly or free for AXA, 3 % or free for Argenta), and no insurer page consulted settles the question.
The implicit rates are our own calculations: the monthly rate that equates a premium paid up front with twelve instalments paid at the start of each month, converted into an annual rate. The average of 11/24 of the premium tied up assumes the same calendar. Maximum rates on consumer credit fall under the FPS Economy. The 27.45 % of tax and levies on third party liability comes from our dedicated article. Insurers and brokers are supervised by the FSMA.
This site compares and calculates. It does not sell insurance, is not an intermediary within the meaning of the Insurance Act of 4 April 2014 and gives no individual recommendation: to change your payment method or your contract, speak to your insurer or an FSMA licensed broker. In a dispute over a statement, the Insurance Ombudsman steps in free of charge; a driver who can no longer find third party cover can turn to the Bureau de Tarification, the Belgian pricing bureau. In short
The payment method is the least examined line on a car insurance quote, and one of the dearest. Free at Belfius Direct on direct debit, it costs 7 % at Ethias according to Selectra, credit at 16.1 %, and a flat 4 € a month at Yuzzu, a 44.7 % implicit rate on third party only. First compare annual premiums in the simulator and the comparison tool, check the detail company by company in our ranking of the best car insurers, then add the price of instalments. It takes one multiplication.
