Omnium deductible in Belgium: which amount should you choose?

Omnium deductible in Belgium: real amounts by type and by insurer, what you actually receive at each level, the hidden threshold behind zero deductible, and the claim frequency at which each option pays for itself in 2026.

ByDamien12 min read

An omnium is sold on its premium and judged on its deductible. On our reference profile, one and the same Belgian insurer offers three levels: 395.88 €, 791.75 € and 3,167 €. A ratio of 1 to 8, on the same car under the same contract. Here is what each level actually pays you on claim day, and the damage frequency beyond which the zero deductible option stops being a luxury.

The mechanism itself, its three forms and its general effect on the premium are set out in our guide to the car insurance deductible. This page does not repeat the definition: it prices the choice.

How much is an omnium deductible in Belgium?

Between 250 € and over 3,000 €, depending on the form chosen and the value of your car. The Test-Achats file updated on 23/05/2025 puts the flat amount between 250 and over 1,000 €, and the percentage deductible at around 2.5 % of the insured value. The published grids of Belgian insurers go further than those orders of magnitude.

Applied to our reference profile, a VW Golf 1.5 TSI with a list value of 31,670 € including VAT, the published options give this.

The cap only bites on expensive cars. At 31,670 €, neither the 625 € cap nor the 1,250 € cap applies: the raw percentage is what you owe. The insured value would need to exceed 50,000 € before the 1,250 € cap became the amount actually due, which explains why those caps go unnoticed in most files.

Editorial illustration of the omnium deductible in Belgian car insurance
The deductible does not change the scope of your cover: it changes the amount that lands in your account.

The deductible only touches one line of your omnium

It applies to material damage alone. Test-Achats is explicit on this, and Ethias confirms it in its own documentation dated 25/10/2024: the omnium deductible does not play in case of fire, glass breakage, theft, natural disaster or animal collision. In compulsory third party liability cover it is reserved for a handful of high risk profiles.

That precision changes the scale of the problem. On the grid of nine Belgian insurers dated 26/01/2026 and detailed in our analysis of the cost of comprehensive car insurance, material damage cover accounts for 474 €/year on average, which is 61 % of the supplement paid to move from third party liability to full omnium. The deductible you are discussing therefore bears on a 474 € line, not on the 1,135 € of your total premium.

That is also why the trade off deserves three minutes of arithmetic rather than a shrug. A badly chosen deductible does not degrade 1,135 € of cover, it cancels 474 of them. And if you ever switch down to mini omnium, the question disappears along with the guarantee: Ethias prices that formula at roughly one third of full omnium and describes it as covering fire, theft, glass breakage, hail and animal collision with no deductible.

Same contract, same car, eight times the deductible

Fédérale Assurance publishes its scale, which few Belgian insurers do. The client chooses between 2.5 % capped at 1,250 € and 10 % uncapped. The first is automatically halved, with no premium supplement, if three conditions are met at underwriting and at claim time: being aged 30 or over, showing a bonus-malus degree of 3 or lower, and having the car repaired at a contracted repairer.

Our reference profile ticks all three boxes. Its real deductible is therefore 395.88 € and not 791.75 €, without paying a cent more.

The same client who had signed up for the 10 % deductible would carry 3,167 €. Eight times more.

What do you actually receive at each deductible level?

A good deal less than the word omnium suggests, on small and mid sized damage. The table below applies each option to four repair amounts, on our reference profile.

Deductible400 € damage800 € damage2,500 € damage6,000 € damage
1.25 % (395.88 €), 500 € threshold0 €404 €2,104 €5,604 €

Flat 450 €0 €350 €2,050 €5,550 €
0 % waived, 500 € threshold0 €800 €2,500 €6,000 €

Two cells are worth pausing on. An 800 € repair with a 2.5 % deductible earns you 8 €, in exchange for an open file, an appointed expert and a claim written into your record. And the 10 % row stays at zero all the way to 3,167 €, which covers the overwhelming majority of bodywork knocks in Belgium.

Zero deductible hides a 500 euro threshold

Fédérale Assurance writes it in plain words: with a reduced or waived deductible, repair costs must reach at least 500 € to trigger the insurer's intervention. Your contract says 0 % and you still pay the whole of a 480 € repair.

The mechanism has a name in Belgium: the English deductible. It retains nothing above the threshold, but it pays nothing below it. On paper the commercial promise holds. In an actual settlement, the band of damage between 0 and 500 € stays entirely on you, and that is precisely the band where a client without a deductible thought he had won something.

At Ethias the logic differs and reads more clearly: the insurer advertises deductible free omnium cover for drivers who meet the minimum age set by the formula, for private use and provided repairs are carried out at an approved garage, while its formula with a deductible applies 450 € per claim. Here the zero deductible is not a paid option bolted onto the contract, it is the contract itself. The age threshold varies by formula and by vehicle type, which makes it the first line to have confirmed in writing.

At what claim frequency does zero deductible pay for itself?

The break even point is a single division: the deductible avoided divided by the annual surcharge gives the interval between two claims beyond which the option costs more than it returns. On our profile the deductible avoided is 395.88 €.

Annual surcharge for zero deductibleBreak evenIn plain terms
25 €6.3 %1 claim every 15.8 years
50 €12.6 %1 claim every 7.9 years
75 €18.9 %1 claim every 5.3 years
100 €25.3 %1 claim every 4.0 years
150 €37.9 %1 claim every 2.6 years

A 35 year old driver at the bottom of the bonus-malus scale, five years without a claim, does not report material damage every four years. Beyond 75 € of surcharge the option therefore becomes statistically a losing bet for that profile, and the 500 € threshold described above only sharpens the verdict, since it removes every small repair from the equation.

The conclusion flips in two situations. Daily street parking, which multiplies bumper scrapes. And the driver who does not have 3,000 € available the day the bodywork goes into the garage: there, zero deductible does not buy an expected gain, it buys liquidity.

A 10 % deductible empties the cover it comes with

Here is the trade off nobody puts on the table. Take the 474 €/year of material damage cover again and add the expected deductible, assuming one claim every eight years.

Deductible chosenMaterial damage premiumAnnual expected deductibleTotal annual costNet annual return
1.25 % (395.88 €)474 €49.48 €523.48 €424.52 €
2.5 % (791.75 €)474 €98.97 €572.97 €375.03 €
10 % (3,167 €)474 €395.88 €869.88 €78.12 €

That last row is the most important result in this article. At this frequency, a client accepting the 10 % deductible pays 474 €/year for cover from which he recovers only 78.12 € in expectation: the deductible absorbs 83.5 % of the price of the guarantee. The gap in total annual cost between the reduced and the high deductible reaches 346.39 €, or 2,771 € over eight years, which far exceeds any plausible premium saving on that line.

A high deductible is not to be refused on principle. It is to be refused when the premium saving obtained in exchange is not quantified: on our profile it would take 200 €/year of saving for the move to 10 % to make sense, and even then only at one claim every 11.9 years.

Three levers that lower the deductible without touching the premium

Before buying a lower deductible, check the ones you can get for nothing. Four mechanisms recur from one Belgian insurer to the next:

  • the contracted or approved repairer, an explicit condition of the reduced deductible at Fédérale Assurance and of the zero deductible at Ethias, and a frequent condition of the zero deductible on glass breakage;
  • age and bonus-malus degree, which at Fédérale Assurance trigger the automatic halving of the deductible from age 30 with a degree of 3 or lower, with no premium supplement;
  • the declared use of the vehicle, private use opening the deductible free regime at Ethias that professional use closes;
  • the decreasing deductible, provided by some Belgian contracts, which falls and then disappears after one to three claim free years.

None of these four levers triggers itself on claim day. They are verified at underwriting, line by line, on the particular conditions. The insurer by insurer comparison is in our ranking of the best car insurers, and the formulas sit side by side on the comparison tool.

Method and sources

This site's reference profile is a 35 year old driver, VW Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claims for five years, around 15,000 km a year. The list value of 31,670 € including VAT was recorded on 31/08/2026 from the Belgian price catalogue of Moniteur Automobile and serves as the base for every percentage in this article.

Deductible rules and their conditions come from the insurers' public pages, consulted on 09/09/2026: the 2.5 % capped at 1,250 €, the 10 %, the automatic reduction to 1.25 % capped at 625 € and the 500 € threshold at Fédérale Assurance; the 450 € deductible, the deductible free regime, the scope of the guarantees concerned and the one to three ratio between mini omnium and full omnium at Ethias, whose file is dated 25/10/2024. The age threshold of the deductible free regime differs by formula and vehicle type in the Ethias documentation: it is given here as a condition, not as a figure, and must be checked in the particular conditions. Market ranges (flat amount from 250 to over 1,000 €, percentage around 2.5 %, no deductible on fire and natural forces) come from the Test-Achats file on the deductible, updated on 23/05/2025. Definitions of omnium and insured value rely on Wikifin, the financial education portal of the FSMA, the Belgian financial markets authority.

The 474 €/year attributed to material damage cover is an average we calculated across the nine insurers present in all three published grids (third party liability, mini omnium, full omnium) from Mon-Assurance-Auto (Yago S.A., broker licensed by the FSMA under number 114863), record dated 26/01/2026; the profile behind that grid differs from ours in age, province and mileage, so only gaps and ratios are claimed to be transposable, not the absolute amounts.

The frequency of one material damage claim every eight years is an unattributed working assumption, adopted to keep the break even points readable; it is not an industry statistic, and each table shows the formula that lets you substitute your own. The 25 to 150 €/year surcharges in the break even table are calculation steps, not recorded prices: no Belgian insurer publishes the price of its deductible waiver.

A word on the Belgian vocabulary for readers new to the market. Omnium is the Belgian name for comprehensive cover, split into mini omnium (external risks) and full omnium (which adds material damage). The bonus-malus is a 0-22 scale on which each at fault claim moves you up and each claim free year moves you down, with a direct effect on the premium. Insurance premium tax is levied on top of the net premium, which is why the amount debited exceeds the tariff quoted. The FSMA is the Belgian financial services and markets authority, which licenses insurers and brokers.

This site compares and calculates. It does not sell insurance, is not an intermediary within the meaning of the Insurance Act of 4 April 2014 and issues no individual recommendation: for personalised advice, speak to your insurer or an FSMA licensed broker. If you disagree with a deductible applied to your claim, the Insurance Ombudsman handles complaints free of charge, and a driver refused by the market can apply to the Tariff Bureau. No insurer pays for its presence in this article, and no link on this page is affiliated: we cite, we do not sell.

In short

The omnium deductible is not a line of the general conditions, it is the second price of your contract. It bears on material damage alone, cover billed at 474 €/year on average, and its amount ranges from 395.88 € to 3,167 € at a single insurer on a single car. Ask for it in euros rather than as a percentage, check the minimum repair threshold that comes with reduced or waived formulas, and only buy zero deductible if the surcharge quoted passes the division test: deductible avoided over annual surcharge, compared with your own claim frequency. On our profile, the deductible obtained free through age, bonus-malus degree and a contracted repairer beats every paid option. Run a premium simulation varying the deductible level, and the full ranking will give you the detail insurer by insurer.

Frequently asked questions

The omnium deductible (franchise in French, vrijstelling in Dutch) is the share of the damage you keep when the insurer compensates your own vehicle. It applies almost exclusively to the material damage cover of a full omnium, meaning damage you cause to your own car. It is set when you sign and appears in your particular conditions. Compulsory third party liability cover normally carries no deductible.

Three forms coexist. A flat amount runs from 250 to over 1,000 € according to the Test-Achats file updated on 23/05/2025. A percentage most often sits between 1.25 % and 2.5 % of the insured value, with contractual caps. At Fédérale Assurance the published scale is 2.5 % capped at 1,250 €, or 10 % uncapped. On an insured value of 31,670 € that gives 791.75 € and 3,167 € respectively.

Yes, at several insurers, but under conditions. Ethias advertises deductible free omnium cover for drivers who meet the minimum age set by the formula, for private use, provided repairs are carried out at an approved garage; its formula with a deductible applies 450 € per claim. Fédérale Assurance offers deductible waiver against a premium surcharge, with a minimum age of 30 and a bonus-malus degree of 3 or lower.

No, and it is not always really zero. At Fédérale Assurance, both the reduced and the waived deductible come with a threshold: repair costs must reach at least 500 € before the insurer steps in. A 480 € repair therefore stays entirely on you even though your contract says zero deductible. The mechanism is the English deductible.

Yes, but the saving has to be weighed against the extra exposure. Moving from 2.5 % capped at 1,250 € to a 10 % deductible adds 2,375.25 € of out of pocket cost per claim on our profile. A premium saving of 100 €/year only offsets that exposure at one claim every 23.8 years. Always ask for the saving in euros before accepting the higher deductible.

Divide the deductible avoided by the annual surcharge. On our profile, a reduced deductible of 395.88 € against a 25 €/year surcharge pays for itself at one claim every 15.8 years; at 50 €/year, every 7.9 years; at 100 €/year, every 4.0 years. A driver at the bottom of the 0-22 bonus-malus scale rarely claims at that pace.

As a rule no. Mini omnium covers external risks, theft, fire, natural forces, glass breakage and animal collision, and Test-Achats confirms there is never a deductible for fire and natural forces. Two exceptions: a small number of insurers apply a deductible on the theft cover, and a glass breakage deductible kicks in if the repair is not carried out at an approved repairer.

Three levers cost nothing. Using an approved or contracted repairer reduces or removes the deductible at most Belgian insurers. Age and bonus-malus degree trigger automatic reductions: at Fédérale Assurance the 2.5 % deductible halves to 1.25 % with no premium supplement for a driver aged 30 or over at degree 3 or lower. Finally, some contracts provide a decreasing deductible after several claim free years.

Rarely. In Belgium the deductible targets material damage cover, not the mini omnium guarantees. Theft is an exception at a limited number of insurers, and hail falls under natural forces, where Test-Achats states there is never a deductible. Check your particular conditions all the same: the general rule is not a legal rule, and any contract may depart from it.

The deductible is a particular condition of the contract: it is changed by endorsement, with the insurer's agreement, and that change feeds through to the premium. In practice the simplest opportunity remains the annual renewal date or a switch of insurer, since the Insurance Act of 4 April 2014 has allowed cancellation at any time from the second year onwards, with two months' notice, since 01/10/2024.
