Stolen car insurance in Belgium: what is paid, and how much?

A stolen car is paid by mini-omnium or full omnium, never by third-party liability. Net amounts, refused cases, recovered cars and the theft risk worked out on a reference Golf.

Yes, but only with mini-omnium or full omnium: compulsory third-party liability never pays for a stolen car. On our reference Golf, theft pays €21,669 net of the deductible, provided you file a police report within 24 hours and left no key in the car.

Is a stolen car paid by insurance?

It is, by the theft cover, which sits in both mini-omnium and full omnium. La Libre recalls it alongside the police figures: third-party liability does not cover theft, omnium does.

Without those covers, nothing. A three-year-old Golf 1.5 TSI is worth about €18,000 on the market, and that sum leaves with the car. Our guide to mini-omnium or full omnium lists what else each formula contains.

How much do you actually receive after a theft?

The value written in the contract, minus the deductible. The table applies this to the reference profile: a 36-month-old Golf 1.5 TSI, agreed value €22,169 (6-month lock, see our article on total loss), assumed deductible €500.

SituationCover that appliesEstimated net payoutWhat to do
Theft with forced entry, or stolen keysTheft€21,669Police report within 24 h, hand over all keys
Theft with no sign of forced entryDepends on the clause€0 to €21,669Read the definition of theft before signing

Attempted theft, €900 of damageTheft (attempt)€400Claim
Attempted theft, €450 of damageTheft (attempt)€0Pay yourself
Third-party liability onlyNone€0€18,000 loss

The attempted-theft damage amounts (€900 and €450) are calculation hypotheses, not recorded prices. The principle comes from Selectra: a broken window and a forced lock are in principle reimbursed.

What about the bonus-malus scale, Belgium's 0 to 22 no-claims system? It does not move. A theft makes you liable for nothing.

Is theft without forced entry covered?

This is the case that separates good contracts from the rest. A relay attack or a cloned key leaves no trace of force, and several contracts demand precisely those traces: without them the insurer may refuse to pay, even though the owner locked the car, put the keys away and made no mistake. Other insurers made the opposite choice and cover stolen keys, with reprogramming costs reimbursed, which changes everything for keyless-entry cars.

For a model as targeted as the Golf, the most stolen model in 2023 with 249 vehicles, that line of the general conditions weighs more than €100 of premium.

Which mistakes cost you the payout?

Almost always the same ones, made before the theft or in the hours after it.

  • Leaving the keys in the car or the door unlocked: negligence, generally excluded.
  • Filing the police report after the 24 hours from discovery, or not keeping a copy.
  • Not handing every key to the expert: KBC asks for "all your keys".
  • Forgetting to warn the alarm centre when a GPS tracker is fitted.
  • Claiming for a theft committed by a relative or an employee: in principle excluded.
  • Counting on car insurance for the bag left on the seat: home insurance applies.

Does theft alone justify mini-omnium?

No, and the arithmetic is unambiguous. In 2023 the police recorded 5,782 car thefts in Belgium, for more than 6 million registered cars. That is a frequency of 0.096% a year, or 0.48% over five years.

Car valueNet payout on theftExpected loss per year
€22,169 (reference Golf)€21,669€20.88
€8,000€7,500€7.23
€4,000€3,500€3.37

Against that €20.88, the mini-omnium bundle (theft, fire, glass breakage, natural events) costs €57 to €317 more than third-party liability alone: €410 to €670 of mini-omnium premium, minus €353 of liability premium. Even multiplying the risk by five to allow for the Golf, you reach €104 a year, only at the bottom of that range.

Insurance is not judged on expected value alone: losing €18,000 at once wrecks a budget. But hail, glass breakage and fire justify the bundle, not theft. Compare the bundle's price on the comparison tool and in the ranking of the best car insurers.

What happens if the car is found?

It all depends on the contract's deadline. Found in time, it comes back to you and the insurer pays for the damage. Found too late, it is written off as a total loss.

How long is the wait, and who pays if the thief causes an accident?

Allow 20 to 30 days after the police report, for a complete file. Without a replacement-vehicle option, you wait without a car.

If the thief causes an accident, a theft reported quickly puts you in principle out of the picture. The Belgian Common Guarantee Fund compensates injured third parties, and the Insurance Act of 4 April 2014 frames the contract. Your own damage requires full omnium.

Method and sources

Site reference profile: a 35-year-old driver, VW Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claims in five years, about 15,000 km a year. The agreed value of €22,169 and the market value of €18,000 (an unattributed market range) come from our total-loss article, read on 31 August 2026. The €353 liability premium comes from the Mon-Assurance-Auto grid of 26 January 2026; the €410 to €670 range for mini-omnium is the band observed on the Belgian market in July 2026. The €500 deductible is a calculation assumption: your real theft deductible is in your particular conditions.

The 5,782 thefts of 2023, the split between regions (3,008 in Wallonia, 1,579 in Flanders, 1,195 in Brussels) and the 249 stolen Golfs come from La Libre (28 February 2025, citing police data), read on 19 October 2026; the official statistics are on police.be. The fleet of over 6 million cars is from the Brussels Times. The 24-hour report deadline and the handing over of all keys come from the KBC page; the 20 to 30 day payout, the recovered-car rules and the forced-entry rules come from Selectra, read on 19 October 2026. The legal framework is the Act of 4 April 2014.

Frequently asked questions

No. Compulsory third-party liability (RC, responsabilité civile) pays for damage you cause to others, never for your own vehicle. Without mini-omnium or full omnium, a stolen car is a dead loss: €18,000 on our three-year-old Golf, an estimated market value.

Within 24 hours of discovering it, including abroad, by calling 101 or 112. KBC and Belgian comparison sites set the same deadline. Ask for a copy of the report and the case number: the insurer needs them, and it also asks for all your keys.

It depends on the theft clause in your contract. Many insurers require signs of forced entry, so a relay attack or cloned key can be refused. Others cover stolen keys and reprogramming costs. Read the definition of theft in your general conditions before you need it.

In principle 20 to 30 days after the police report, according to Belgian comparison sites. The clock starts from a complete file: police report, keys, registration certificate. The contract also sets the period after which an unrecovered car is written off as a total loss.

Within the period set by the contract you get it back and the insurer pays for the damage. After that period it is written off as a total loss: you can keep it by repaying the indemnity, less repairs, or leave it with the insurer.

In principle not by car insurance. Items fixed to the vehicle fall under omnium, while personal belongings (bag, laptop, glasses) fall under home insurance, subject to its conditions and limits. Theft from the passenger compartment without forced entry is the case most often refused.

If the theft was reported quickly, you are in principle not liable. The Belgian Common Guarantee Fund (Fonds commun de garantie) compensates injured third parties. Your own damage is only repaired by full omnium, and the theft does not move your degree on the bonus-malus scale.
