Threshold Deductible: Pay 499 € or Nothing

The threshold deductible (franchise anglaise) in Belgian car insurance: below a 500 € threshold you pay everything, above it nothing. Worked on a Golf, versus a fixed deductible.

ByDamien7 min read

A threshold deductible is a trigger: under 500 € the insurer pays nothing, from 500 € it pays everything. On the reference Golf, 499 € of damage costs you 499 €, and the same damage at 500 € costs you nothing.

The whole appeal, and the whole danger, sits at that tipping point.

What is a threshold deductible in car insurance?

A deductible that withholds nothing. The French name, franchise anglaise, misleads: you picture a share taken off the payout, whereas here the contract sets a minimum amount of damage before the insurer steps in. Below it, no payout. Above it, full payout.

It applies to the own-damage cover of comprehensive (omnium) insurance, the cover that repairs your own car. Mandatory third-party liability has no such mechanism, and mini-omnium does not in principle. Our guide to the car insurance deductible describes the three classic forms; this page isolates the trickiest one and puts numbers on it.

Threshold or fixed deductible: who pays what on the same damage?

Take the reference profile's Golf 1.5 TSI, 31,670 € including VAT at list price (read on 31 August 2026). Three policies: a fixed 450 € deductible, a threshold deductible set at 500 €, and a proportional deductible of 2.5 % of the insured value, which is 791.75 €. The table shows what you pay.

Assessed damageFixed 450 €Threshold 500 €Proportional 2.5 %
300 €300 €300 €300 €
480 €450 €480 €480 €
500 €450 €0 €500 €
800 €450 €0 €791.75 €
1,500 €450 €0 €791.75 €
4,000 €450 €0 €791.75 €

Two readings. Under 450 € the three formulas are equal: you pay everything. And from 500 € upward, the threshold deductible beats the other two by 450 € to 791.75 €.

The 450 € (Ethias flat amount) and 500 € (Fédérale Assurance threshold) figures come from public pages read in September 2026; the out-of-pocket calculation is ours.

Why do 499 € and 500 € of damage not cost the same?

Because the threshold creates a cliff. With a 500 € threshold, a 499 € quote leaves 499 € to you and a 500 € quote leaves zero: a 499 € gap for one extra euro of damage.

Against the fixed deductible, the only place the threshold deductible loses is the narrow 450 to 499 € band. You pay the whole damage (up to 499 €) where the fixed one caps your share at 450 €. Maximum loss: 49 €. Gain from 500 € upward: 450 €.

That is a rare asymmetry in insurance. You risk 49 € to win 450.

Is a threshold deductible the same as a relative deductible?

Yes, it is the same mechanism under two names. Vocabulary varies from one insurer and one country to another, which explains the confusion when reading policy terms.

Common termSynonymMechanism800 € damage, 500 € threshold or deductible
Fixed deductibleAbsoluteAmount subtracted from the payoutInsurer pays 300 €, you pay 500 €
Threshold deductible (franchise anglaise)Relative, simpleTrigger: nothing below, everything aboveInsurer pays 800 €, you pay 0 €
Proportional deductiblePercentageShare of insured value or damage, sometimes with a minimum and a capDepends on the rate: 2.5 % of 31,670 € leaves 791.75 €

The terms 'relative' and 'absolute' come from the documentation of the insurer Leocare, which operates in France. Rely on the mechanism described in the contract rather than its label.

Which Belgian insurers apply a threshold?

Few state it clearly. Here is what can be verified.

  • Fédérale Assurance. The reduced deductible (1.25 % capped at 625 €) and the deductible waiver of its comprehensive cover require 'at least 500 €' of repair costs before the insurance steps in, according to its comprehensive deductible page, read on 25 October 2026. Conditions: at least 30 years old and a bonus-malus degree of 3 or lower at signing, repairs at an approved repairer.
  • Ethias, AXA, KBC. The comparison site Callmepower names them as offering the threshold deductible on some contracts, without amounts. Ethias also publishes a flat 450 € per claim formula. No threshold figure could be confirmed: ask for it in writing.
  • Price of the option. None of these insurers publishes the extra premium or the discount attached.

Fédérale's waiver is a pure threshold deductible: 0 € deductible above 500 €, everything on you below. The reduced deductible is a hybrid: the 500 € threshold stays, but once crossed it still withholds 395.88 € on our Golf. At 499 € you pay 499 €. At 500 € you pay 395.88 €.

What extra premium makes a threshold deductible worth it?

No Belgian insurer publishes that price, so the calculation starts from an assumption and says so. Picture a driver whose own-damage claims split evenly between 300, 700, 1,500 and 4,000 €. The average out-of-pocket per claim is then 412.50 € with a fixed 450 € deductible, 75 € with a 500 € threshold, and 645.88 € with the proportional 791.75 €.

Frequency is also a working assumption, not attributed: one claim every eight years, then every five.

FrequencyFixed 450 € (per year)Threshold 500 € (per year)Proportional 791.75 € (per year)Maximum extra premium justified versus fixed
1 claim every 8 years51.56 €9.38 €80.73 €42.19 €
1 claim every 5 years82.50 €15.00 €129.18 €67.50 €

Reading: at one claim every eight years, a threshold deductible is worth it as long as it costs less than 42 € of extra premium a year. Beyond that, the fixed deductible is cheaper. For scale, the whole own-damage cover weighs 474 € a year on the Mon-Assurance-Auto grid of 26 January 2026 (gap between full omnium at 1,135 € and mini-omnium at 661 €, average of nine insurers, on a grid profile different from ours).

Our article on choosing the deductible amount details the same mechanics for percentage formulas.

Does a threshold deductible change the bonus-malus?

Not directly. Damage under the threshold triggers no payout, so most often no file. At-fault damage above the threshold, by contrast, is reported and paid like any other. It can then push your degree up the 0-22 scale: on the reference profile, one at-fault claim costs 535 € of premium over five years, as our article on the cost of an at-fault claim details.

That is where threshold and reporting meet: 520 € of damage reimbursed in full can end up costing more, once the malus is counted, than 480 € paid out of pocket. The full reasoning is in our guide to reporting a claim or paying out of pocket.

When should you choose a threshold deductible?

When your realistic risks sit well above the threshold. The table sorts the situations.

Your situationTypical damageVerdict
Street parking, recent car, fear of a big hit1,500 € and moreThreshold deductible, if the extra premium stays under 42 €
Frequent small car-park scrapes150 to 450 €Indifferent: you pay everything either way

Reduced deductible with threshold (Fédérale type)500 € and moreWork out the hybrid: 395.88 € remains due on the Golf

What should you check in the contract before signing?

Four lines decide everything.

  • The exact threshold amount, and whether it applies to all covers or only to own damage.
  • What happens above the threshold: full reimbursement or a residual deductible (the hybrid case).
  • Who assesses the damage, and whether a second expert opinion is possible.
  • The price of the option, with and without the threshold, in black and white on the quote.

Method, reference profile and sources

The site's reference profile: 35-year-old driver, Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claims for five years, about 15,000 km a year. Insured value used: 31,670 € incl. VAT, Belgian list price read on 31 August 2026 in the Moniteur Automobile catalogue. Reference premiums: Mon-Assurance-Auto grids (Yago S.A., broker authorised by the FSMA, the Belgian financial regulator, no. 114863), read on 26 January 2026 and consulted in October 2026: full omnium 1,135 €, mini-omnium 661 €, hence 474 € for own damage. The grid's profile differs from ours; only the gaps transfer.

The 500 € threshold rules come from Fédérale Assurance's deductible page, read on 25 October 2026. Ethias's 450 € flat amount comes from its public documentation read on 9 September 2026. The insurers named by Callmepower are an indication, not a confirmation. The 300, 700, 1,500 and 4,000 € amounts and the frequencies of one claim every five and eight years are calculation assumptions, not statistics. How deductibles work is explained by Test-Achats and Wikifin, the FSMA's financial education site. Legal framework: the law of 4 April 2014 on insurance.

This site compares and calculates. It does not sell insurance, is not an intermediary and gives no individual recommendation: speak to your insurer or an FSMA-authorised broker. Summary

The threshold deductible withholds nothing but demands everything: 499 € on you just under the threshold, 0 € just above. Against a fixed 450 € deductible, it loses 49 € at worst and wins 450 € from 500 €, provided its extra premium stays under 42 € a year at one claim every eight years. Frequently asked questions

It is a deductible that works as a trigger. While the damage stays under the agreed amount, for example 500 €, the insurer pays nothing and you cover everything. Once the damage reaches or exceeds that amount, the insurer reimburses the whole sum with nothing deducted. The word 'deductible' is misleading: no share is withheld above the threshold.

Yes for large damage, no for small damage. Against a fixed 450 € deductible, it saves 450 € on any damage of 500 € or more and only costs extra in the 450 to 499 € band, 49 € at most. It is however often sold with a higher premium; the maximum premium worth paying is calculated in the article.

In practice yes. Insurers and comparison sites say relative or simple deductible for a threshold below which nothing is paid and above which everything is. 'Anglaise' is the usual Belgian term for the same mechanism. Always check how your policy describes the mechanism, not only its label.

Fédérale Assurance applies a 500 € threshold to the reduced deductible and the deductible waiver of its comprehensive cover. The comparison site Callmepower also names AXA, Ethias and KBC, with no amount or conditions given: confirm with the policy in hand. None of these insurers publishes the price of the option.

You pay 480 €, the insurer 0 €. The expert's assessment or the repairer's quote sets the amount, so everything hangs on that figure. An estimate of 500 € flips the reimbursement to 100 %. Inflating a quote to cross the threshold is insurance fraud.

In principle, damage to your own car that you do not report, or that triggers no payout, leaves no trace on the 0-22 bonus-malus scale of third-party liability. Some policies apply a comparable scale to comprehensive cover, though. Ask your insurer whether a file opened without payout is recorded.

It is a contract change, so an amendment the insurer must accept, with an effect on the premium. The easiest moment is the annual renewal. Ask in writing for the threshold, the premium with and without the option, and any age or bonus-malus condition.
