A full omnium, the Belgian name for fully comprehensive cover, costs 1,135 € a year on average. The figure is accurate and it says almost nothing, because it contains the compulsory third-party liability you would pay anyway. Strip that out and the real price of the comprehensive cover appears: 782 € a year, of which 474 € for the single cover that repairs your car when you are at fault.
Three formulas, nine insurers, one grid
The three public Mon-Assurance-Auto grids cover the same vehicle, the same profile and the same recording date, 26 January 2026. They live on three separate pages, which makes the subtraction impossible. Here it is, done.
| Insurer | Liability only | Liability + mini-omnium | Liability + full omnium | Comprehensive supplement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yuzzu | 270 € | 615 € | 939 € | 669 € |
| Federale Assurance | 354 € | 781 € | 999 € | 645 € |
| Belfius Direct Assurances | 281 € | 487 € | 1,014 € | 733 € |
| ING | 323 € | 518 € | 1,078 € | 755 € |
| Baloise Insurance | 399 € | 678 € | 1,144 € | 745 € |
| ACM Insurance | 393 € | 578 € | 1,168 € | 775 € |
| Ethias | 340 € | 807 € | 1,246 € | 906 € |
| CBC | 335 € | 619 € | 1,286 € | 951 € |
| AG Insurance | 486 € | 867 € | 1,343 € | 857 € |
| Average | 353 € | 661 € | 1,135 € | 782 € |
Simulated profile: a driver born in 1968, salaried, at the lowest degree of the Belgian bonus-malus scale (the no-claims ladder running from 0 to 22, where a lower degree means a lower premium), VW Golf Diesel 85 kW worth 27,433 € excluding VAT and 33,193 € including VAT, living in Court-Saint-Étienne in Walloon Brabant, under 10,000 km a year, 500 € deductible except ING at 600 €.
The last column exists nowhere else. It takes one subtraction, and it changes how the whole grid reads.
On an omnium bill of 1,135 €, a third of the amount is not omnium.
What does an omnium really cost, once liability is deducted?
782 € a year on average, and that amount splits again into two very unequal parts.
The first part is the mini-omnium block: theft, fire, glass breakage, natural forces. It is worth 308 € a year on average. The second is the own-damage cover, the one that repairs your own car when the accident is your fault. It is worth 474 €, which is 61 % of the omnium bill on its own.
| Insurer | Mini-omnium block | Own-damage cover | Own-damage share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federale Assurance | 427 € | 218 € | 34 % |
| Yuzzu | 345 € | 324 € | 48 % |
| Ethias | 467 € | 439 € | 48 % |
| Baloise Insurance | 279 € | 466 € | 63 % |
| AG Insurance | 381 € | 476 € | 56 % |
| Belfius Direct Assurances | 206 € | 527 € | 72 % |
| ING | 195 € | 560 € | 74 % |
| ACM Insurance | 185 € | 590 € | 76 % |
| CBC | 284 € | 667 € | 70 % |
218 € at Federale, 667 € at CBC. A ratio of 1 to 3.06 for the same line of contract, on the same vehicle, on the same day. And the table holds a full reversal: at ACM Insurance the theft and fire block costs 185 € while own damage costs 590, whereas at Federale the hierarchy flips, 427 € against 218 €. Two opposite pricing philosophies behind one identical word.
Why does the cheapest insurer change with the formula?
Because companies do not place their pricing aggression in the same spot. The ranking reshuffles at every formula.
Yuzzu leads on liability only at 270 € and still leads on full omnium at 939 €. On mini-omnium it drops to fourth, behind Belfius Direct (487 €), ING (518 €) and ACM Insurance (578 €). ACM therefore offers the third cheapest mini-omnium in the panel and lands sixth on the price of the comprehensive cover. Federale Assurance shows the second cheapest full omnium in the panel, yet the third most expensive mini-omnium.

The spread moves too. Between the cheapest and the dearest in the panel, the gap reaches 80 % on liability only, 78 % on mini-omnium and just 43 % on full omnium. The more complete the formula, the tighter the market. Comparing on the omnium line alone therefore means comparing where the gaps are narrowest.
How much does optional cover cost, and does it change the ranking?
It weighs from 36 € to 241 € a year, and yes, it reshuffles the deck.
| Insurer | Full omnium alone | Legal expenses, driver cover and assistance | Annual total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yuzzu | 939 € | 177 € | 1,116 € |
| Federale Assurance | 999 € | 218 € | 1,217 € |
| Belfius Direct Assurances | 1,014 € | 210 € | 1,224 € |
| ING | 1,078 € | 225 € | 1,303 € |
| CBC | 1,286 € | 36 € | 1,322 € |
| Baloise Insurance | 1,144 € | 209 € | 1,353 € |
| Ethias | 1,246 € | 241 € | 1,487 € |
| AG Insurance | 1,343 € | 213 € | 1,556 € |
CBC moves from seventh to fifth in this panel of eight, because its legal expenses cover and its European assistance are built into the base rate. Ethias slips one place, Baloise too. Over eight years of ownership, the gap between the lightest and the heaviest package comes to 1,640 €, for ultimately comparable cover. ACM Insurance is absent from this table, for want of a published price on its assistance cover.
Those amounts come from the same dated grid. The insurer-by-insurer detail sits in our ranking of the best car insurers, and the exact scope of each option is taken apart in our article on optional cover.
What does an omnium cost across the whole ownership period?
The interesting question is not the annual price, it is the ratio between what you pay in and what the contract can still pay out. That ratio degrades every month.
The standard Belgian market depreciation cuts the insured value by 1 % a month after a six-month grace period. Applied to the 33,193 € Golf, with the average comprehensive supplement of 782 € a year and a 500 € deductible, it gives this.
| End of year | Insured value | Payout net of deductible | Cumulative supplement | Supplement-to-value ratio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 31,201 € | 30,701 € | 782 € | 2.5 % |
| 2 | 27,218 € | 26,718 € | 1,564 € | 2.9 % |
| 3 | 23,235 € | 22,735 € | 2,345 € | 3.4 % |
| 4 | 19,252 € | 18,752 € | 3,127 € | 4.1 % |
| 5 | 15,269 € | 14,769 € | 3,909 € | 5.1 % |
| 6 | 11,286 € | 10,786 € | 4,691 € | 6.9 % |
| 7 | 7,302 € | 6,802 € | 5,472 € | 10.7 % |
| 8 | 3,319 € | 2,819 € | 6,254 € | 23.6 % |
The market rule says you drop full comprehensive cover as soon as the premium exceeds 5 to 7 % of the vehicle's value. Our article on mini-omnium or full omnium sets out the reasoning. The table lets you date the crossing: the 5 % threshold falls during year five, the 7 % one right at the close of year six. Reason on the total premium instead of the supplement and the same thresholds fall at 3.1 and 4.8 years respectively.
Two readings, two verdicts. The right one isolates the supplement, since liability is due either way.
When does an omnium cost more than it can return?
After 7 years and 5 months. At that exact point you have paid in 5,773 € of comprehensive supplements, and the car's insured value is also 5,773 €.
The break-even point is where two lines cross: the cumulative premium, climbing by 782 € a year, and the insured value, falling by 3,983 € a year under depreciation. They meet at 7.38 years. Past that moment, even by destroying the car outright the next day, the insurer will not hand back what you handed over.
Run the same calculation on the total premium, liability included, and break-even moves forward to 6 years and 10 months at 7,804 €.
Six discounts that genuinely exist on the Belgian market
All of them appear in black and white in the same insurers' own descriptions, and none is automatic. You have to ask.
- The mileage discount. Ethias advertises 15 % under 10,000 km a year, AXA 15 %, ING 13 %, Federale 10 % under 12,500 km, Beobank 15 % under 8,000 km, Baloise up to 20 %. On the panel average, 15 % of 1,135 € is 170 € a year.
- A higher deductible. Ethias advertises 20 % off the premium for a 450 € deductible. At Baloise the choice runs from 250 € to 1,000 €. Every deductible step buys premium down, and is repaid at claim time.
- Formulas built for used cars. AG Insurance prices its Top Occasium formula at 20 % off for vehicles under six years old. Yuzzu offers Omnium Essentium, P&V a used-car full omnium up to eight years at actual value.
- Contract seniority. Baloise applies an automatic 15 % reduction on the omnium premium from the fourth year of cover onwards.
- Safety equipment. Baloise and Argenta both advertise 10 % for two safety systems fitted.
- Bundling contracts. Federale Assurance ties discounts to holding several policies with the same company.
What tax and fees sit on top of the advertised rate?
Nothing sits on top, in fact: the tax is already inside. Belgian insurers advertise premiums tax included, which makes the gap between the headline rate and the amount debited smaller than people expect.
The tax on non-life insurance premiums went from 9.25 % to 9.6 % on 1 July 2026. On the average full omnium of 1,135 €, the net premium is 1,035.58 € and the tax 99.42 €. The FPS Finance sets that rate, and Assuralia, the sector federation, publishes its effect on the Belgian average premium. Our article on the insurance premium tax covers the calculation and the policy fees.
Two items do escape the advertised rate. Policy fees, charged once at inception by some insurers. And the instalment surcharge, when you pay quarterly or monthly: Belfius Direct and ING advertise monthly payment at no extra cost, others charge for it. On an omnium at 1,135 €, a 4 % instalment surcharge costs 45 € a year, which is more than the July tax rise.

Method, reference profile and sources
The premiums in this article come from the three public Mon-Assurance-Auto grids, published by Yago S.A., a broker registered with the FSMA, the Belgian financial services and markets authority, under number 114863: the liability grid, the mini-omnium grid and the full omnium grid. All three carry the same recording date, 26 January 2026, and were consulted on 02/09/2026.
The profile simulated by that publisher is a driver born in 1968, salaried, at the lowest bonus-malus degree, with a VW Golf Diesel 85 kW worth 27,433 € excluding VAT and 33,193 € including VAT, living in Court-Saint-Étienne in Walloon Brabant, driving under 10,000 km a year, with a 500 € deductible except ING at 600 €. It differs from this site's reference profile, a 35-year-old driver, VW Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claims for five years, around 15,000 km a year: age, province and mileage do not line up. The absolute amounts are therefore not transferable as they stand to our profile, and this article never presents them as quotes. The gaps between formulas and between insurers do transfer, since they are measured at a rigorously constant profile.
The averages, supplements, cumulative figures and break-even point are in-house calculations, run on the nine insurers that publish an amount in all three grids at once. AXA, P&V, DVV, Allianz, Argenta and Beobank are absent from some tables, for want of a published amount on at least one of the three formulas.
Depreciation of 1 % a month after a six-month grace period is a standard Belgian market convention, not a legal rule: every contract carries its own scale, and the list-value periods recorded on the grid run from 12 months at Yuzzu to 48 months at CBC. The 33,193 € list value including VAT is that of the vehicle simulated by the publisher. The rate of the tax on non-life insurance premiums falls under the FPS Finance, and its breakdown in euros is an in-house calculation. The mechanics of payout, deductible and insured value rest on Wikifin, the financial education portal of the FSMA, and on the Insurance Act of 4 April 2014.
This site compares and calculates. It does not sell insurance, is not an intermediary within the meaning of Belgian law and issues no individual recommendation: to take out a policy, go to the insurer or to a broker registered with the FSMA. In a dispute, the Insurance Ombudsman intervenes free of charge, and a driver who can no longer find any liability cover may apply to the Tariff Bureau. Ethias, for instance, publishes the detail of its own omnium formulas. No insurer pays for its presence in this article, and no link on this page is affiliated.
In short
The price of an omnium is not read off the annual premium line. It is read in the subtraction: 1,135 € of full omnium minus 353 € of compulsory liability gives 782 € of cover actually bought, of which 474 € for own damage alone. That cover is worth 218 € at one company and 667 € at another, and the ranking of insurers reshuffles entirely depending on whether you look at liability, mini-omnium, full omnium or the all-in price. Over eight years the contract costs 6,254 € for a final ceiling of 2,819 €, with break-even at 7 years and 5 months. Run your own profile through the simulator, put the offers side by side in the comparison tool, and the ranking of the best car insurers will give you the detail company by company. Ask for all three rates, not just the omnium one.
