Yes, your postcode weighs on your premium. On omnium cover (the Belgian term for comprehensive insurance), the same car and the same driver pay 37% more in Brussels than in Leuven, about €420 a year on our reference profile. The effect is real, but it is the least workable factor of all: you cannot negotiate it, you cannot fudge it, and it weighs less than the choice of insurer.
How much does a postcode add to an omnium premium?
Between €0 and €488 a year, depending on the town where the car is kept. The only dated, province-by-province comparison we found is a CallMePower study relayed by Business AM on 5 April 2023: a new Citroën C3, a driver born in 1983, licensed since 2003, sole driver, five claim-free years, six insurers quoted in every provincial capital and in Brussels.
| Town | Average monthly premium | Per year | Index (Leuven = 100) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hasselt (Limburg), cheapest | €69.41 | €832.92 | 86 |
| Leuven (Flemish Brabant) | €80.33 | €963.96 | 100 |
| Bruges (West Flanders) | €80.68 | €968.16 | 100 |
| Other provincial capitals (average) | €91.06 | €1,092.72 | 113 |
| Mons (Hainaut), second dearest | €101.60 | €1,219.20 | 126 |
| Brussels, dearest | €110.08 | €1,320.96 | 137 |

A word on the index: I used Leuven as the base because this site's reference profile lives in Flemish Brabant. The study also states a "46.38%" gap between the dearest and cheapest towns, a percentage its own amounts do not reproduce (110.08 against 69.41 gives +58.6% or -36.9% depending on the base). I stick to the euro amounts.
On the reference profile: €420 more in Brussels, €154 less in Hasselt
The reference profile of this site is a 35-year-old driver, VW Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claims for five years, about 15,000 km a year, whose full omnium averages €1,135 a year (in-house average of the Mon-Assurance-Auto grids, recorded on 26 January 2026).
| Town | 2023 index | Transposed full omnium | Gap with Flemish Brabant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hasselt | 0.864 | €980.71 | -€154.29 |
| Leuven | 1.000 | €1,135.00 | €0 |
| Bruges | 1.004 | €1,139.95 | +€4.95 |
| Other capitals | 1.134 | €1,286.61 | +€151.61 |
| Mons | 1.265 | €1,435.53 | +€300.53 |
| Brussels | 1.370 | €1,555.34 | +€420.34 |
Why does the city cost more?
Because the insurer does not price you, it prices your neighbourhood. The premium uses the accident, theft, vandalism and flood statistics of the area, and traffic density does the rest. Selectra notes without quantifying it that big cities such as Brussels and Antwerp are rated riskier than low-density areas, and that street parking is penalised against a private garage.
No Belgian page we consulted publishes the exact weight of the postcode in an insurer's formula. I do not invent one.
Our article on fiscal horsepower shows the same mechanism in reverse: a popular factor that weighs less than people think. Here the factor is real, but nobody helps you put a number on it.
Does switching insurer weigh more than switching town?
Yes, and the 2023 study says so without meaning to. In Brussels, the yearly gap between the dearest and cheapest insurer for the same profile reaches €545.40. That is more than the average €488 gap between Brussels and Hasselt, and 1.5 times the €357 gap between Brussels and Leuven.
In Mons, the L'Avenir reading (4 April 2023) is sharper still.
| Insurer in Mons | Monthly premium | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| AXA, dearest | €126.49 | €1,517.88 |
| Average of six insurers | €101.60 | €1,219.20 |
| Yuzzu, cheapest | €81.02 | €972.24 |
| Gap between the extremes | €45.47 | €545.64 |
The cheapest quote in Mons (€81.02) costs as much as the Leuven average (€80.33). In other words, someone in Mons who compares erases the geographical handicap. Our guide to lowering your premium ranks this lever first, and a quote is how you reach it. Gaps between insurers change every year: the 2023 ones only serve as an order of magnitude.
Can you declare a relative's address to pay less?
The temptation exists, and the arithmetic dismantles it. Take a Brussels driver whose full omnium should cost €1,555.34 and who declares a Flemish Brabant address to pay €1,135. The saving is €420.34 a year. A claim occurs, the insurer discovers the real address.
The Act of 4 April 2014 on insurance covers this in article 60. When the omission is not deliberate but the policyholder is at fault, the insurer pays only the proportion between the premium paid and the premium it should have collected. Here: 1,135 ÷ 1,555.34 = 72.97%.
| Claim | Reduced payout (72.97%) | Loss for the insured | Years of saving wiped out |
|---|---|---|---|
| €1,500 | €1,094.61 | €405.39 | 1.0 year |
| €6,000 | €4,378.45 | €1,621.55 | 3.9 years |
| €12,000 | €8,756.90 | €3,243.10 | 7.7 years |
The first serious claim wipes out several years of "gain". And that is the favourable scenario. If the false declaration is deliberate, the insurer can invoke nullity of the contract and pay nothing at all. The driver is then left alone with the bill, on top of any injured third parties who will have to be compensated.
The amounts in this section are calculations on assumptions: claims of €1,500, €6,000 and €12,000 chosen for illustration, a 2023 index transposed to a 2026 premium. The legal mechanism is the text's own. A court weighs each case, and the Insurance Ombudsman remains the route in case of refusal.
Moving house to pay less: the arithmetic
Rarely worth it on its own. Over five years, and still on our profile, here is what the gain from settling in a less exposed town would represent.
| Move | Yearly gain | Over five years |
|---|---|---|
| Brussels to a capital like Leuven | €420.34 | €2,101.72 |
| Brussels to Hasselt | €574.63 | €2,873.15 |
| Mons to Leuven | €300.53 | €1,502.65 |
| Leuven to Hasselt | €154.29 | €771.45 |
These sums matter when choosing where to live if two homes are otherwise equal. They do not justify a move. A rent, a commute or the move itself quickly exceed these amounts.
Where the premium is a legitimate criterion is parking. A private garage cuts the risk of theft and vandalism, and Selectra indicates it works in the policyholder's favour. No Belgian source we consulted publishes its value in euros: ask for two quotes, with and without a garage, and measure it yourself.
Five checks before declaring your address
- Declare the address where the car sleeps most nights, not the most convenient administrative one.
- Tell the insurer about any move within the contract's period, even if the premium may rise.
- State the parking correctly: closed garage, private car park or public road.
- Ask for the quote with the exact postcode, not that of a cheaper neighbouring town.
- Re-read the "policyholder's address" line of your special conditions at each renewal.
For the other factors that push a premium up, our piece on the premium increase sorts causes by weight.

Limits of these figures
They date from April 2023 and rest on a single car, a Citroën C3, a single driver profile and six insurers. They cover omnium: we found no equivalent regional comparison for liability-only cover. Some Belgian pages publish town surcharges in percentages (+12% here, -8% there) with no profile, no date and ranges that contradict each other from page to page: I do not reuse them.
Method, reference profile and sources
Regional study: CallMePower, relayed by Business AM on 5 April 2023, and taken up by L'Avenir on 4 April 2023 for the Mons detail (new C3, driver born 1983, licensed 2003, sole driver, city-centre residence, six insurers). Consulted on 10 October 2026. Yearly amounts, indexes and gaps are in-house calculations. The euro amounts in the insurer-gap section are L'Avenir's; the two publications differ on the overall percentage, flagged above.
Reference profile: 35-year-old driver, VW Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claims for five years, about 15,000 km a year. The €1,135 full omnium is the in-house average of nine insurers from the public grids of Mon-Assurance-Auto (Yago S.A., broker registered with the FSMA under number 114863), recorded on 26 January 2026; their simulated profile differs from ours, only gaps and ratios carry over. Address risk factors: Selectra, consulted on 10 October 2026. Proportional reduction and nullity: article 60 of the Act of 4 April 2014 on insurance; each contract's terms prevail.
This site compares and calculates. It sells no insurance, is not an intermediary and issues no individual recommendation: for a personal case, speak to your insurer or to a broker registered with the FSMA, Belgium's financial services and markets authority. If no company will cover you for liability, the Bureau de Tarification (the tariff bureau) sets a premium. No link is affiliated and no insurer pays for this article.
In short
A postcode can add up to 37% to omnium cover, about €420 a year in Brussels on our reference profile, based on the gap measured in 2023. It cannot be negotiated or fudged: a false address can cut every payout by 27%. The lever within reach remains comparison, which pays more than any house move. Run a premium simulation, line offers up on the comparison tool and find the insurer-by-insurer detail in the ranking of the best car insurers.
