To estimate your car insurance premium in Belgium, start from €353 for liability or €1,135 for full comprehensive cover, the amounts for a 35-year-old driver in Flemish Brabant, then adjust for your bonus-malus level, mileage and postcode. The result remains a range of roughly plus or minus a third.
Here is the method, with the coefficients, three priced cases and the margin of error.
How do you estimate your car insurance price in five steps?
The formula fits on one line: estimated premium = base premium × level coefficient × mileage coefficient × region coefficient × driver coefficient. Each coefficient equals 1.00 when your situation matches the reference profile.
- Choose the cover: third-party liability alone, or liability plus a comprehensive supplement.
- Take the matching base from the table below.
- Multiply by your bonus-malus level coefficient (the Belgian 0 to 22 scale, where a low level means a claim-free record).
- Add mileage, region and occasional driver where relevant.
- Apply the insurer range: 0.78 to 1.40 on liability.
None of this is a tariff. It is framing.
Which base should you use: liability only or comprehensive?
This site's reference profile is a 35-year-old driver, Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claims for five years, about 15,000 km a year. The amounts come from the average of nine insurers on the public grid of Mon-Assurance-Auto, recorded on 26 January 2026.
| Item | Annual amount | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Liability only | €353 | €29.42 |
| Supplement to reach full comprehensive | €782 | €65.17 |
| Full comprehensive (liability plus supplement) | €1,135 | €94.58 |
Why split liability and supplement? Because the coefficients below were measured on one or the other, never both at once. Level and mileage are read on liability. Postcode is read on comprehensive cover. Mixing them without saying so would distort the result.
Which coefficients apply to each factor?
Four factors can be priced from public sources. None is an insurer's tariff, and each carries a limit the table states.
| Factor | Coefficient | Measured on | Source and date | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bonus-malus level 0 | 0.76 | Liability | 23-level reference grid, consulted 21 October 2026 | Each insurer has its own scale |
| Level 3 | 0.86 | Liability | same | same |
| Level 6 (reference) | 1.00 | Liability | same | same |
| Level 9 | 1.17 | Liability | same | same |
| Level 11 | 1.29 | Liability | same | same |
| Level 14 | 1.52 | Liability | same | same |
| 10,000 km a year | 0.96 | Liability | Median of twelve insurers, recorded 23 August 2026 | Belfius Direct rises 67%, AG Insurance 5% |
| 25,000 km a year | 1.07 | Liability | same | same |
| Hasselt | 0.86 | Comprehensive | CallMePower, 5 April 2023, Leuven = 1.00 | One car, six insurers |
| Bruges | 1.00 | Comprehensive | same | same |
| Other provincial capitals | 1.13 | Comprehensive | same | same |
| Mons | 1.27 | Comprehensive | same | same |
| Brussels | 1.37 | Comprehensive | same | same |
| Declared young occasional driver | 1.15 | Liability | Ethias rule, recorded 25 September 2026 | Specific to one insurer |
The level outweighs everything else. Going from level 0 to level 14 moves liability from €267 to €535 at the same mileage, more than any other line. Our article on the cost of an at-fault claim walks through that scale year by year.
Mileage coefficients are a straight-line interpolation between 10,000 and 25,000 km, from a median gap of 11%: an in-house calculation, not an insurer's grid.
What do the estimates look like for three different drivers?
The reference profile is not yours, so here are three applications. The range multiplies liability by 0.78 and 1.40, and the comprehensive supplement by 0.80 and 1.25, two spreads measured on different insurers' records (see below).
| Driver | Calculation | Central estimate | Range | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A. Hasselt, liability only, level 0, 10,000 km | 353 × 0.76 × 0.96 | €258 | €201 to €361 | €21.50 |
| B. Brussels, comprehensive, level 11, 25,000 km | Liability 353 × 1.29 × 1.07 = €487, plus supplement 782 × 1.37 = €1,071 | €1,558 | €1,233 to €2,016 | €129.84 |
| C. Mons, comprehensive, level 3, 15,000 km, declared young occasional driver | Liability 353 × 0.86 × 1.15 = €351, plus supplement 782 × 1.27 = €989 | €1,340 | €1,062 to €1,723 | €111.65 |
Driver B pays six times what driver A does. Nothing in B's profile is extravagant: a middling level, a big city, a bit more road.
That is exactly why the national average is no use to him.
Why does the range stay so wide?
Because the biggest source of uncertainty is not in your answers, it is at the insurer. Across twelve Belgian insurers, the same liability cover for the same profile, recorded on 23 August 2026 on Mon-Assurance-Auto at 10,000 km a year, runs from €270 at Yuzzu to €486 at AG Insurance, with a median of €347. Relative to that median, the extremes are 0.78 and 1.40.
| Insurer | Liability at 10,000 km | Ratio to median |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest (Yuzzu) | €270 | 0.78 |
| Median of twelve | €347 | 1.00 |
| Most expensive (AG Insurance) | €486 | 1.40 |
For comprehensive cover, the only published comparison we know of is Mons in 2023: €972.24 at the cheapest, €1,517.88 at the most expensive, for an average of €1,219.20. That gives 0.80 and 1.25. Our car insurance quote guide draws a rule from it: five quotes capture 76% of that gap.
Which amount should you compare to the quote: net, taxed or monthly?
Three traps move the figure without your profile changing.
- Net versus taxed. On liability, taxes and contributions add 27.45% to the net premium since 1 July 2026. A net quote of €258 therefore costs €328.77 at renewal. The detail is in the article on car insurance premium tax.
- Annual versus monthly. Instalments cost 2% to 8% of the premium depending on the insurer. For driver B that is €31 to €125 a year.
- Different deductible. A comprehensive policy with a high deductible costs less but cannot be compared with a low-deductible one. See our guide to the omnium deductible.
When all three are aligned, your estimate and the quote are talking about the same thing.
Which mistakes distort an estimate?
Most come from too much trust in a round number. Here they are, with their cost.
- Guessing your level from memory. It is read on the claims-history certificate, available online. Being three levels off moves liability by €37 to €80.
- Mixing liability and comprehensive. Applying a coefficient measured on comprehensive to liability doubles the error.
- Forgetting real mileage. Declaring 10,000 km while driving 25,000 exposes you to a 40.2% benefit reduction in our quote guide's example (article 60 of the Act of 4 April 2014).
- Treating the national average as a price. Assuralia's €320 is before tax, liability only, all profiles together.
- Believing the estimate replaces comparison. It bounds, it does not rank insurers.

Method and sources
Reference profile: 35-year-old driver, Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claims for five years, about 15,000 km a year. Liability at €353 and full comprehensive at €1,135: in-house averages of nine insurers on the public grids of Mon-Assurance-Auto (Yago S.A., broker authorised by the FSMA, the Belgian financial regulator, no. 114863), recorded on 26 January 2026. The source does not say whether these amounts are net or taxed.
Insurer spread and mileage effect: grid of twelve insurers on the same source, recorded on 23 August 2026 for a different profile (woman born 1968, diesel Golf, Walloon Brabant). Only ratios are transposed here, not absolute amounts. Postcode coefficients: CallMePower study relayed by Business AM of 5 April 2023, comprehensive cover, one Citroën C3, indices recalculated. Level coefficients: 23-level grid published by Selectra and HelloSafe, consulted 21 October 2026, with the caveat that each insurer sets its own scale. Average premium of €320: Assuralia, 2024. Legal framework: Act of 4 April 2014 on insurance. Young occasional driver rule: Ethias, specific to that insurer.
The coefficients come from different sources and do not form a statistical model: multiplying them assumes the factors are independent, which insurers do not guarantee. Treat the result as an order of magnitude. This site compares and calculates. It does not sell insurance, is not an intermediary and gives no individual recommendation: for personal advice, contact your insurer or an FSMA-authorised broker. In a dispute, the Insurance Ombudsman is competent, and if no insurer will cover you for liability, the Tariff Bureau (Bureau de Tarification) sets a premium by decision. In short
A serious estimate starts from €353 on liability or €1,135 on comprehensive, adjusts for level, mileage and postcode, then accepts a margin of 0.78 to 1.40. It sets a budget and spots an outlier quote, it does not choose an insurer. Run a premium simulation, put offers side by side on the comparison tool and see the ranking of the best car insurance.
