Switching car insurance in Belgium has never been simpler: since 1 October 2024, once the first year has passed, you can cancel at any time with two months' notice, and the registered letter is no longer mandatory. What remains is doing it in the right order — notice period, claims history certificate, switchover dates — so you never drive a single day without cover or lose your bonus-malus.
Can you switch car insurance at any time in Belgium?
Yes, after the first year of the contract. Since the reform that took effect on 1 October 2024, once the first twelve months are over, you can cancel your car insurance whenever you want, without waiting for the annual renewal. The contract then ends two months after your notification.
During the first year, however, you generally stay committed until the first renewal: the contract runs for one year and renews by tacit agreement. This logic protects risk pooling in year one while leaving you free afterwards. Since 1 February 2026, this flexibility has been reinforced for consumers whose contract renews tacitly: cancellation at any time is the rule, with the contract ending two months after the request.

What is the notice period to cancel car insurance?
Two months. That is the standard notice period since 1 October 2024, down from three months. If you notify your cancellation today, your contract stops two months later, to the day.
This shorter period genuinely changes things: you no longer need to plan a quarter ahead to take advantage of a better offer. Other situations keep their own rules, though. After a claim, for example, cancellation — yours or the insurer's — takes effect three months after notification, not two. Always check which cancellation trigger you are invoking, because it determines the applicable timing.
Do you still have to send a registered letter?
No, it is no longer mandatory. Since October 2024, cancellation can be done digitally: electronic signature, the insurer's online form, or email depending on the company. It is one of the reform's most concrete simplifications.
A registered letter nonetheless remains advisable in one case: keeping dated proof. The start of the notice period depends on the date of your request; in the event of a dispute, an acknowledgement of sending removes all ambiguity. Whether you go digital or paper, always keep a written record of your request and its date.
Can you cancel before the end of the first year?
Sometimes, yes, but only for a listed reason. During the first twelve months you cannot cancel "at any time", but certain events open an early exit right. The most frequent: a premium increase beyond indexation. If the insurer raises your rate beyond simple contractual indexation, it must notify you in advance, and you then have a defined window to cancel from that notification.
Two other classic cases: cancellation after a claim, within the month following payment or refusal of compensation, taking effect three months later; and the disappearance of the risk, for example the sale or destruction of the vehicle. Conversely, your insurer can also terminate the contract for non-payment of the premium (after formal notice), after a claim, or in the event of fraud or aggravated risk.
How do you keep your bonus-malus when switching insurer?
By passing your claims history certificate to the new insurer. This document records all claims over the last five years and replaces the old bonus-malus certificate. Without it, your new company cannot credit your good history and might apply a less favourable starting premium.
You get it two ways: via the online Carattest platform, or by asking your current insurer directly, who must hand it over within 15 days. One point of attention: if your vehicle was insured with several companies over the last five years, request a certificate from each of them. The bonus-malus mechanism itself — how it rises and falls — is detailed in our bonus-malus in Belgium guide.
How do you avoid a coverage gap when switching car insurance?
By making the two contracts overlap cleanly. The rule is simple: take out the new contract before the old one ends, then align the start date of the new one with the end date of the old one. One day without third-party liability, and your car is in breach.
The risk is not theoretical: driving without third-party liability cover is banned in Belgium and exposes you to heavy penalties, on top of leaving you financially exposed in the event of an accident. The safe method comes in three steps: obtain a firm quote and a start date, let the new insurer (or you) send the cancellation, then check in writing that the new cover begins the day the old one stops.

When is switching car insurance really worth it?
When an equivalent offer costs noticeably less, or when your current contract has deteriorated. Premiums vary widely from one Belgian insurer to another for the same profile, and a company can raise its rate year after year without the increase being obvious. Comparing before you renew regularly saves several tens to several hundred euros a year.
Three moments are particularly favourable: as the annual renewal approaches, when you receive a premium-increase notice, and when your situation changes — new vehicle, move, lower mileage. But beware the price-only trap: a lower premium paired with a high deductible, exclusions or cut-rate assistance is not a good deal. Compare the premium and the cover.
Where to compare before switching insurer?
The recurring players on the Belgian market — AG Insurance, Ethias, KBC, Belfius Direct (formerly Corona Direct), P&V, Yuzzu and AXA — offer neither the same premiums nor the same cover for an identical profile. It is precisely this gap that makes switching worthwhile, provided you measure it before you leave.
The useful reflex: put a figure on your current situation, then compare it with the market. A premium simulation gives you an estimate based on your vehicle, your profile and your postcode; the comparator lines up the offers guarantee by guarantee; and our ranking of the best car insurers details the strengths and weaknesses of each insurer. Three tools to check, figures in hand, that switching will genuinely pay off — in price as in cover.
Method and sources
The timings, procedures and documents cited reflect the Belgian framework in force after the cancellation reform that took effect on 1 October 2024; they do not replace your specific policy terms or personalised advice, as the exact situation depends on your contract, your profile and your insurer. The cancellation and notice-period rules draw on information published by Test-Achats and Belgian insurers such as P&V; the claims history certificate and the Carattest platform are documented by AG Insurance and Callmepower. In summary
Switching car insurance in Belgium is simple as long as you respect the order of operations. After the first year, any-time cancellation is available with two months' notice since October 2024, and with no mandatory registered letter. Before the renewal, only certain triggers — premium increase beyond indexation, after a claim, disappearance of the risk — allow an early exit. Request your claims history certificate to keep your bonus-malus, make the two contracts overlap to avoid any coverage gap, and only leave for a genuinely better offer. Run a premium simulation, compare on the comparator and check the ranking of the best car insurers before signing.
