Belfius Direct car insurance: per-km pricing and break-even

Belfius Direct car insurance in Belgium: 2nd cheapest liability at 10,000 km (€281), 11th of 12 at 25,000 km (€470). Break-even, plans and deductible priced.

ByDamien8 min read

Belfius Direct, the former Corona Direct, offers the second cheapest third-party liability premium on the market at 10,000 km a year (€281) and the eleventh of twelve at 25,000 km (€470). The break-even plays out around 15,000 km, the mileage of this site's reference profile.

The whole file comes down to a slope.

Belfius Direct against the market: liability at 10,000 and 25,000 km

The public Mon-Assurance-Auto grid gives, for twelve insurers, the third-party liability premium at two mileages. Belfius Direct is second at the lowest mileage and second to last at the highest. No other insurer changes rank that much.

Mon-Assurance-Auto survey of 26 January 2026 (Yago S.A., broker licensed by the FSMA, the Belgian financial services and markets authority, no. 114863), grid profile: a woman born in 1968, bonus-malus 0 to -3 (the scale of 23 degrees that sets your claims-history multiplier), Golf Diesel 85 kW at €33,193 including VAT, Court-Saint-Étienne (Walloon Brabant). The extra-cost and cents columns are our calculation. P&V, DVV and AXA do not appear.

At Belfius Direct, each extra kilometre weighs three to seven times more than at the eleven others. The others do not charge the kilometre: they apply a band, and the band costs little. Belfius Direct charges the kilometre itself, and gives back the money for kilometres not driven. One offsets the other.

The grid holds only two points per insurer. Everything that follows between them assumes a regular slope, which is a working assumption and nothing more.

At what mileage does Belfius Direct stop being the cheapest?

Around 15,000 km. At the mileage of the site's reference profile (15,000 km a year), the straight line drawn between the two points gives €344 at Belfius Direct, exactly the same as CBC and Allianz.

Yuzzu, at €270 then €327, stays ahead over the whole measured range, and AG Insurance, at €486 then €511, stays behind. The threshold therefore reads insurer by insurer, never as a block.

A benchmark for your own case: the average Belgian car drives about 16,000 km a year according to Car-Pass, the official odometer register. At that level, Belfius Direct stays €40 under the median of the eleven others at 15,000 km (€344 against €384), and goes back €43 above it at 25,000 km (€470 against €427). Our guide to pay-per-kilometre car insurance explains the mechanism without the amounts.

How much do the plans cost on a Golf VIII at 7,500 km?

Callmepower lists, as of 9 June 2026, the monthly prices for a policyholder born in 1980, licensed since 2000, no claims, Brussels, a 2019 petrol car, 7,500 km a year. Selectra publishes the same figures and specifies that they include a 15 % reduction on the first annual premium, valid until 13 April 2026.

Plan, VW Golf VIII (€33,000)Per monthPer yearPer year without the offer (assumption)
Liability only€23.80€285.60€336.00
Liability and small omnium€36.98€443.76€522.07
Liability and full omnium€66.82€801.84€943.34

The last column divides the third by 0.85. That is our own calculation: no page consulted publishes the price without the offer. The welcome offer is worth €50 on liability, €78 with small omnium and €142 with full omnium, and it does not renew in the second year.

Small omnium adds €158 to liability, full omnium €516. On a €7,000 Dacia Sandero, small omnium costs €34.08 a month (€408.96 a year) and full omnium is not offered.

This profile is not the Mon-Assurance-Auto grid's: the two cannot be compared line by line, only in shape.

Is the €250 deductible worth its extra €83 a year?

Belfius Direct sets the deductible on its full omnium at €500, reducible to €250. Callmepower shows "from" premiums of €975 for the €500 deductible and €1,058 for the €250 one. The option therefore costs €83 a year.

It pays back €250 each time the omnium settles a claim. The table compares the two at different frequencies.

One paid claim everyDeductible saving, per yearExtra premiumAnnual balance
2 years€125.00€83+€42.00
3 years€83.33€83+€0.33
5 years€50.00€83-€33.00
8 years€31.25€83-€51.75
10 years€25.00€83-€58.00

Break-even falls at 3.01 years (250 ÷ 83). To fix ideas, Assuralia, the insurance federation, measures 4.90 % of third-party liability claims per passenger car in 2023, which is one every twenty years: at that frequency, a €250 saving per claim is worth €12.25 a year, and the option costs 83. The liability frequency is not the omnium's, which also pays for hail, theft or vandalism, but the gap is too wide for the nuance to close it.

Unless you know you claim every three years, keep the €500 deductible. The full reasoning is in our article on choosing a deductible amount.

Four limits to know before signing

Here they are, each with its source.

  • The heavy driver pays full price. 1.26 cents per extra kilometre, when the market runs from 0.17 to 0.43. Selectra lists "less attractive for high mileage" among the drawbacks.
  • No discount for bundling contracts, again according to Selectra. At other insurers, bundling brings a 5 % to 20 % discount: our guide to lowering your premium prices that gap.
  • A capped replacement vehicle. Small omnium grants it for 30 days at most. The dedicated option, about €31 a year according to Callmepower, provides it 20 days after an accident, a fire or vandalism and 30 days after a theft.
  • Monthly payment to confirm in writing. The Belfius Direct FAQ (consulted on 28 September 2026) mentions no fee for direct debit, while the product information sheet of October 2024 mentions possible fees: the detail is in our article on monthly or annual payment.

The three standard options combined, driver cover (€31 a year), replacement vehicle (€31) and legal expenses (€34), add €96 a year to a base premium. These are approximate Callmepower amounts, not a contractual rate.

Which driver is Belfius Direct right for?

For the one who drives little, regularly, and can prove it. Here is where each profile lands.

These amounts are from the January 2026 grid, not from a quote. A real quote depends on your bonus-malus, your postcode and your vehicle. To set the offer beside those of Yuzzu or Ethias, the comparison tool and the simulator do the work, and the ranking of the best car insurers gives company-by-company detail.

Method, reference profile and sources

The site's reference profile: a 35-year-old driver, Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claim for five years, about 15,000 km a year. The liability premiums by mileage come from the Mon-Assurance-Auto grid (Yago S.A., broker licensed by the FSMA), surveyed on 26 January 2026 (the page also says 28 January) and consulted on 26 October 2026. Its profile differs from ours: only the gaps carry over, not the absolute amounts. The lines between 10,000 and 25,000 km, the break-even thresholds and the median at 15,000 km are our own calculations, which assume a regular progression between two published points.

The plans, deductibles, options and the 25,000 km ceiling come from Callmepower (page of 9 June 2026) and Selectra (page of 26 October 2026), both consulted on 26 October 2026. These two comparison sites are not Belfius Direct: their figures must be confirmed on a quote. The cancellation terms, legal expenses terms and the reducible deductible come from the product information sheet of October 2024. The 4.90 % claim frequency is from the Assuralia study on third-party motor liability in 2023. For the general framework of omnium cover, see Wikifin, the FSMA's financial education site.

This site compares and calculates. It does not sell insurance, is not an intermediary within the meaning of the law of 4 April 2014 on insurance and gives no individual recommendation: speak to Belfius Direct or to a broker licensed by the FSMA. In a dispute, the Insurance Ombudsman steps in free of charge, the Fonds commun de garantie (the common guarantee fund) compensates victims of an uninsured at-fault driver and the Bureau de Tarification (the tariff office) is the fallback for a driver nobody wants to insure. In short

Belfius Direct is an insurer for low-mileage drivers: €281 of liability at 10,000 km, €344 at 15,000 and €470 at 25,000, with a kilometre charged three to seven times more than at its competitors. Keep the €500 deductible rather than the €250 one (€83 more a year), check what becomes of the 15 % welcome offer in year two and count your kilometres before signing. Frequently asked questions

In practice yes: Corona Direct, the pioneer of pay-per-kilometre cover in Belgium, now operates under the Belfius Direct brand. The mechanism described on the pages consulted on 26 October 2026 is still that of kilometre-based insurance: you estimate your mileage, the insurer compares it with the real figure at year end and settles the difference. Check the insurer's name on your quote, since that is the one that is bound.

It depends first on mileage. On the Mon-Assurance-Auto grid of 26 January 2026, liability cover alone costs €281 at 10,000 km and €470 at 25,000 km. For a Golf VIII at 7,500 km, Callmepower lists €23.80 a month for liability, €36.98 with small omnium and €66.82 with full omnium, welcome offer included according to Selectra. The two profiles differ, so their amounts cannot be added together.

In principle, yes. Real mileage is compared with the starting estimate at year end, and a refund or a top-up applies depending on the gap. That mechanism is the whole point of the product. It is paid for with a per-kilometre cost far above other insurers: 1.26 cents per extra km on the reference grid.

Callmepower states that beyond 25,000 km declared over the year, the extra kilometres are no longer charged. On the grid's liability premium, 15,000 km more than 10,000 costs €189; beyond 25,000, nothing more. It is a safety net for the exceptional year, not a rate for a heavy driver: at 25,000 km the premium is still the second most expensive in the grid.

After the first year, a policyholder who is a consumer can cancel at any time, with two months' notice and no fees or penalties, according to the product information sheet of October 2024. Before that, cancellation must be given at least two months before the annual renewal date, by registered letter, bailiff's writ or a letter with acknowledgement of receipt.
