Without assistance, a wrong-fuel mistake caught in time costs €450 in Belgium, and omnium changes nothing in principle. The real danger lies in the second you turn the key: an engine that has started can take the bill from €160 to €2,000.
Here is the full calculation, with its dates.
How much does a wrong-fuel mistake cost in Belgium?
From €160 to €450 if the engine did not run, from €500 to €2,000 if it drew in the wrong product. I found no Belgian statistic on how many mistakes happen each year, which rules out pricing a premium. The amounts, however, exist.
| Item | Amount | Source and pricing date |
|---|---|---|
| Draining and cleaning the tank at a garage, Belgium | €160 | VRT, 27 September 2023 |
| Draining the tank, France | €100 to €300 | Allianz France, 25 March 2025 |
| VAB tow for a non-member, up to 50 km | €290 | VRT, September 2023 |
| Touring refuel vehicle, non-member | €479 | VRT, September 2023 |
| Injection system repair | €500 to €2,000 | Allianz France, 25 March 2025 |
| Engine, serious cases | several thousand euros | VRT, September 2023, no figure |
All these prices are independent of the policyholder's profile. The site's reference driver (35 years old, Golf 1.5 TSI, Flemish Brabant, no claim for five years) pays the same drain as anyone else. Only the assistance subscription is open to debate.
Does omnium pay for a wrong-fuel mistake?
In principle no. Belgian third-party liability (RC) never repairs your own car, and omnium covers events that the Ethias sheet lists: wrong fuel is not among them. Its Mobility extension tows free of charge, but only "in the event of a road accident". Picking the wrong nozzle is not, in the everyday sense, a road accident.
In France, Selectra finds the same wall (article of 28 September 2026, tables updated on 31 October): the all-accidents cover generally excludes damage to the engine, pump or injectors caused by a wrong-fuel mistake. Those contracts are not ours. I cite them for lack of a Belgian document saying otherwise, not to settle the matter for you.
What should you do in the first minutes?
Every minute before starting is worth hundreds of euros. Order matters more than speed.
- Do not start the engine the moment you notice the mistake, not even to move the car.
- Put it in neutral and push it out of the way, or leave it in place with the hazard lights on.
- If you have already driven off, stop safely and switch off: the engine often stalls by itself within a kilometre, according to Touring.
- Call your assistance provider. Touring Fuel Rescue (078 178 178) pumps out the wrong fuel on site, without towing, and answers any motorist, member or not, but mainly on the Brussels-Antwerp axis (pages updated in March 2025).
- Photograph the pump and keep the receipt.
The engine started: from €160 to €2,000
The difference is brutal. A drain before starting remains an incident of a few hundred euros. After it, the wrong fuel has crossed the pump and the injectors, and the bill is counted in thousands, up to replacing the engine in the worst cases.
Let us work out what a cover for this case would pay, under a €500 deductible, the one in the public reference grid (Mon-Assurance-Auto, priced on 26 January 2026). Ethias imposes it on under-26s and raises it to €500, €1,000 or €1,500 depending on the plan when the repair goes to a non-approved garage.
| Damage | Deductible | Net payout, if the contract covers it | Left to you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drain, €160 | €500 | €0 | €160 |
| Injection, €500 | €500 | €0 | €500 |
| Injection, €1,250 (midpoint of range) | €500 | €750 | €500 |
| Injection, €2,000 | €500 | €1,500 | €500 |
Two lessons. A drain is never reported. And even a hypothetical cover leaves €500 to you as soon as the repair exceeds it.
Do you need an assistance plan for this risk alone?
No, and the calculation takes three lines. Here is what the year of the mistake costs depending on cover, at the 2023 prices recorded by VRT.
| Scenario | Subscription for the year | Costs linked to the mistake | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| No assistance (VAB, non-member) | €0 | €450 | €450 |
| VAB member | €149 | €160 | €309 |
| Touring member with refuel option | €140 | €248 | €388 |
Having assistance therefore saves €290 per incident (€450 minus €160). At today's subscriptions, €164 at VAB and €106.96 for Touring Go, priced on 11 October 2026 in our guide to roadside assistance, you would need 0.57 and 0.37 mistakes a year to pay back the subscription. That is one every 1.8 years for VAB, one every 2.7 years for Touring.
Yet the real frequency sits far lower. A 2022 Corona Direct survey gives 0.092 call-outs a year, all causes combined. If every call-out were a wrong-fuel mistake, which is false, the expected saving would be 0.092 times €290, or €26.68 a year, against €107 to €164 of subscription.
Touring now displays €75 "from" for Go Belgium, exactly 30% below €106.96. I could not establish whether this is a first-year discount. At €75 the break-even stays at 0.26 mistakes a year, one every 3.9 years. Same verdict.
Should you report the mistake to your insurer?
For a drain, no. For an injection repair, only if your contract covers it, and Article 74 of the law of 4 April 2014 then requires you to notify the insurer within the contract's deadline, often eight days. The full procedure is in our guide to reporting a car claim.
Four reflexes push the bill up.
- Starting the engine "to see" whether it still runs.
- Driving to the garage instead of calling.
- Waiting until the next day to drain, while the mixture circulates.
- Paying for a second assistance plan in the belief that wrong fuel is covered, when the contract says nothing about it.
Method, reference profile and sources
Priced on 1 November 2026. The Belgian costs (€160 drain, €290 VAB tow, €479 at Touring, subscriptions of €149 and €140, refuel option at €248) come from a VRT report of 27 September 2023 describing the case of a single motorist; it is neither an average nor a catalogue tariff, and current prices are probably higher. The ranges of €100 to €300 and €500 to €2,000 are French (Allianz France, updated 25 March 2025). At VAB, towing is covered for members, but draining, cleaning and parts remain the driver's responsibility, according to the same source.
The assistance subscriptions of €164 (VAB) and €106.96 (Touring Go) are those of our article of 11 October 2026. Touring's €75 price is displayed on its plans page, consulted on 1 November 2026. The frequency of 0.092 call-outs a year comes from a 2022 Corona Direct survey already used in that article. The €500 deductible is the one in the Mon-Assurance-Auto grid (Yago S.A., broker registered with the FSMA under no. 114863), priced on 26 January 2026; the Ethias conditions come from its product information sheet, and the sheet does not mention wrong fuel, which is not the same as a written exclusion. The break-even points and expected saving are in-house calculations.
For the general framework, see Wikifin, the financial education portal of the FSMA, Belgium's financial services regulator, which supervises intermediaries. A refused assistance or compensation claim can be challenged free of charge with the Insurance Ombudsman. This site compares and calculates. It does not sell insurance, is not an intermediary and gives no individual recommendation: contact your insurer or an FSMA-registered broker. No link is affiliated.
In short
A wrong-fuel mistake costs €450 without assistance, €309 with a VAB subscription, and up to €2,000 if the engine started. Omnium does not cover it in principle, and a €500 deductible exceeds a drain anyway. Do not buy assistance for this risk alone, but never start the engine.
